The Face Base Roundup

When I first started getting into makeup, I was always really afraid of foundations and other face products and stuck to eye products. In my mind at the beginning, I felt like putting on foundation, tinted moisturizer, or even concealer would look like I was trying too hard. But I soon expanded my horizons beyond the world of eyeshadow palettes and started dabbling in base products. I've amassed a small collection of them, with something for almost every occasion, so I thought I'd go over each of them and when I reach for them the most.

On good skin days when I still need some coverage (I usually always do - my skin is the kind that gets dark spots from old breakouts that take months and months to go away), I'll always reach for my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. I'll spare you a long rave because I've mentioned my love for this before, but it's got the perfect amount of coverage to even everything out and cover up any and all redness that tends to creep up around my nose. My acne marks usually show through a little, but I'm usually not bothered as long as the rest of my skin is evened out. It's super moisturizing without getting greasy or melting off halfway through the day and just looks like you have almost perfect skin.

On other lighter coverage days when I don't want such a dewy finish, I reach for the Revlon Nearly Naked Foundation. This has very light coverage, about the same as your average tinted moisturizer, but again gives just enough to even everything out. This isn't as moisturizing as the tinted moisturizer (as expected), so it leaves a more satin finish on the skin. I reach for this one more in the summer when I'm producing my own natural glow.

Another drugstore option that I love is the L'Oreal True Match Foundation. This has more coverage than the previously mentioned bases, and again gives a satin finish. I've been loving the look it gives with my fall makeup, but since I have to mix two shades together (C2 and C3) I'll admit I haven't been reaching for it too often. It's still a lovely formula though, and I reach for it on not-so-great skin days when I have the time to concoct the perfect shade.

The first foundation I bought was the LancΓ΄me Teint Miracle Foundation. I had gone to Sephora determined to get the Nars Sheer Glow and was gutted to find out none of the shades matched me. The woman brought this out for me to try instead, and I fell in love. This has got some serious dewiness to it, so probably not one for oily skin. When you let the bottle sit, you can see delicate veins of shimmer appear at the surface of the bottle, but you never see actual shimmer on your skin. This is great for diffusing the light and blurring imperfections - it hides my acne scars really well.  Because of the serious beach-babe glow this gives, I tend to reach for it more in the summer, but I should be breaking it out more in the cold weather because my skin could use some kind of life put into it.

I've saved the best for last - the Diorskin Nude Skin-Glowing Foundation. I've mentioned this already, but seriously I'm in love. This gives such a natural look to the skin while still giving great coverage - I'd say it's a buildable medium. The finish isn't overly dewy or matte. It just really looks like my skin. It's amazing that it allows small freckles to show through (if I choose - I can cover them up with a second layer), yet still covers up redness and hides dark spots.  No matter how much I build up (sometimes I like to put two layers on and around my nose to really make sure the redness is hidden), it never looks cakey or like I have anything on. This may be the extent of my collection for awhile because I can't see myself loving any other base product more than I love this foundation.

Have you tried any of these base products before? What's your favorite foundation?

Cozy Nighttime Pamper Routine

Happy Thanksgiving! I thought since the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas tends to be a stressful time for some, I'd write up a little post on how I take a night to myself every now and then to unwind and pamper myself.

One of my favorite things to do on these nights is take a nice bath, so a Lush product is a must. One of my favorites is the Twilight Bath Bomb. It smells like lavender and changes the bathwater the most beautiful shades of pink, purple, and blue - what could be more relaxing? While in the bath I like to use a body scrub to really slough off any dead skin. I've been loving The Body Shop Harvest Raspberry Body Scrub because it looks and smells just like raspberry jam. It really looks like you could eat it (but please don't)! I think it must have been limited edition, but definitely scoop one up if they bring it back in the spring!

Another thing I like to do is treat myself to a facemask (or two). I like applying the Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask to my nose, forehead, and chin after cleansing to really clear out my pores. After continuing with the rest of my usual skincare routine (toner, eye cream, serum), I'll slather on a bit of the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask instead of my usual night cream. This is my absolute favorite mask. It smells incredible and leaves my skin looking so healthy and glowing in the morning. I always like to moisturize all over, especially after using a body scrub, so on pamper nights I'll use a body butter as an extra relaxing luxury. I love the Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Buttercream. It's more of an energizing than a super relaxing scent (it actually smells like Sprite!), but the product melts into the skin and leaves the skin feeling lovely and moisturized, but never greasy.

I usually hate painting my nails, but if I'm taking a whole night to myself it's something I'll always do. My nails have been positively awful lately because I fell back into the habit of biting them, so instead of using a polish I've been using the Orly BB Creme for Nails. Once you get past the gimmick of it, it's actually a great product. It feels moisturizing on the nails, and the sheer peachy tint of it evens out the nails and leaves a "your nails but better" effect. I've really been loving it.

Once I've finished the beauty section of the night, I like to curl up with a cozy-smelling candle, like the Marshmallow Fireside candle from Bath & Body Works. Bath & Body Works candles are my favorite - they burn so evenly and cleanly and distribute the fragrance well. This scent is my favorite because it has the sweetness of vanilla/marshmallow mixed with a warm woodiness that really smells like a campfire. I also love to either cozy up with a book - I've just started Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn after absolutely loving Gone Girl - or watching movies or a TV show boxset. Gilmore Girls is my all-time favorite - you can bet on it that I'll probably be watching the dance marathon episode from season 3.

What do you like to do to pamper yourself?

Date Night Makeup

My boyfriend and I have been dating for over four years and practically spend every free minute together, but we still like to designate a night every week for date night, whether it be cooking together, going to a movie, or going to a restaurant (one of our recent date nights was going to a local restaurant that the newspaper had deemed serves up the best burritos around to test that theory, and the newspaper was indeed correct). I always like to play with my makeup and get a little more dolled up than my usual everyday/work makeup (although I still go for a natural look), so I thought I'd go through my most reached for date night products.

No matter what condition my skin is in, I'll always use a light layer of the Diorskin Nude Skin-Glowing Foundation. This just makes my skin look so healthy, awake, and glowing from within. I'll do any concealing with the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer - this is by far the best multi-tasking concealer I've tried and works equally well on redness, blemishes, and dark circles. I like to go for a soft neutral blush, like the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Exposed, swept higher up on the cheekbones for a more sculpted effect without needing a separate contour.

I'll fill in my eyebrows with the Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade because the result is a perfected yet natural brow. Nine times out of ten I'll reach for my Urban Decay Naked3 Palette - if these aren't perfect "date night" colors I don't know what are. The soft rosy-hued shades are still neutral, yet give a softer, more romantic look. I also love using Benefit's Creaseless Cream Shadow in RSVP as a base because the pink-champagne shade fits in nicely with the colors in the palette. My go-to look from the palette is Burnout (3rd from left) on the lid with Limit (4th from left) or Nooner (7th from left) in the crease, and sometimes I'll put a little bit of Liar (8th from left)- my favorite shade from the palette - in the outer corner. I'll softly line my upper lashline with the double-ended 24/7 Glide On Eyeliner that goes with the palette, and put a little of the Benefit Watt's Up highlighter in the inner corners of my eyes to brighten everything up. I'll curl my eyelashes and apply a coat or two of the Clinique Lash Power Feathering Mascara for a fanned out fluttery look.

Lastly is lips, and I always go for a neutral option rather than a bold that has to be constantly checked on and touched up. My current favorite is the Nars Audacious Lipstick in Anita, but the Dior Addict Lip Glow or the Maybelline Color Elixir in Caramel Infused are lovely as well.

Do you do your makeup any differently on "date nights?"
