A Mascara Match Made in Heaven

January 24, 2015

When I first heard that to get the best dramatic lashes, you should layer different mascaras, I thought, "No way am I doing that." You see, at the time, I was such a makeup snob that I only wanted to use high-end brands and I could barely justify one expensive mascara, let alone two or three. But I revisited this idea now that I've been converted to drugstore mascaras (seriously, some are just as good as the expensive ones - mascara is one of the things I won't buy from high-end brands anymore), and the result was even better than I had hoped.

Top: No mascara, eyelashes curled. Middle: One coat of L'Oreal Miss Manga. Bottom: One coat Miss Manga + One coat Maybelline Lash Sensational.

Top: No mascara, eyelashes curled. Middle: One coat of L'Oreal Miss Manga. Bottom: One coat Miss Manga + One coat Maybelline Lash Sensational.

You're probably all sick of me raving about the L'Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara. This was my favorite mascara, because while I have fairly long lashes, they're not particularly voluminous. While the Miss Manga gave me the volume I was looking for, I realized it wasn't quite meeting my lengthening and defining needs. Enter the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara - I'll admit I only picked this up because it was a new release and came in a pretty pink tube, but I sure am glad I did. This gives a little bit of volume but great length and even greater separation and definition. When I wear this alone, it almost looks like false lashes because of how fanned out it makes my lashes.

Going back to the Miss Manga, I always found that if I wanted to add multiple coats, it could tend to get a little clumpy. One day I was just experimenting and decided to add the Maybelline mascara over the L'Oreal one, and I think some kind of magic happened. I got the volume from the Miss Manga, and then the coat of Lash Sensational separated each lash and fanned it out. The result? A very believable false lash effect.

Do you ever use more than one mascara at once? What's your favorite combination?

The Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palettes

January 22, 2015

I think just about every beauty blogger has swooned over Charlotte Tilbury's makeup line at one time or another. Ever since the line launched, I had my eyes on one of her eyeshadow quads - the packaging is divine for one, and the colors in each palette compliment each other so well that you could get a foolproof look every time, whether it's dramatic or simple. I had my heart set on The Dolce Vita, a collection of warm neutrals, because I thought it would really compliment my brown eyes. Then the limited edition Fallen Angel palette came out and I fell in love all over again.

I was so surprised and grateful to open the Dolce Vita palette on Christmas morning. It was just as beautiful in person as I had seen online. A few days later, I found out I had won a giveaway on Morgan's blog that I had entered before Christmas for the Fallen Angel palette! I seriously think with the two of these, I might never need any more eyeshadows ever again.

Everyone always talks about how beautifully packaged these quads are, and they really are, but the most important thing to me is the formula. These are so buttery and soft, unlike any other eyeshadows I've tried. They're not as boldly pigmented as other brands like Urban Decay, but I like this because they're easier to apply and build up to the desired amount of color. I like that the colors don't have real names, but rather their use ("prime," "enhance," "smoke," and "pop"), so it's easy to know what shade should go where if you're feeling stuck about how to use the palette. I'm seriously loving the warm shades of the Dolce Vita palette, and the cooler shades of the Fallen Angel palette are really doing it for me as well. I love both the taupe and bronze shades in the Fallen Angel palette - they're lovely colors to use in a quick single color eye look. And the Dolce Vita palette is totally swoon-worthy - just look at that reddish shade. I've been reaching for one of these almost every day, and I don't see this obsession ending any time soon.

Have you tried any Charlotte Tilbury products? What's your favorite product from her line? I need ideas for my birthday wishlist...

The Subtly Enhanced Lip with MAC & Clarins

January 20, 2015

Don't you just love when you find a favorite combination of products? One day when I had applied the MAC Lip Pencil in Soar all over my lips and it was feeling a little dry, I reached for my Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in 01 Rose to add a little moisture and shine. The result - a new favorite duo.

I haven't spoken too much about MAC Soar, but it's quickly become my go-to lipliner for every day. I previously wore Whirl all the time, but Soar is just a little more pink/mauve and more flattering on me. Using a lip liner all over, even when I don't overdraw my lips, helps to make them look plumper because any inconsistencies in my natural lip line is evened out, and the color is uniform all over the lips, rather than fading a little at the edges. The sheer pink color of the Clarins Lip Perfector compliments the lip pencil perfectly, and the slight glossy finish really draws light to the lips and makes them look a little more plump. The lip pencil has the tendency to settle into fine lines if your lips aren't moisturized properly, but with the super moisturizing balmy gloss on top this is never an issue.

What's your favorite lip combo?
