Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit: I'm in Love

March 10, 2015

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen me tweeting relentlessly about the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit from when I ordered it until it arrived on my doorstep and I tried it for the first time. I’m not being dramatic - I honestly think I was the most excited about it as I’ve ever been for a new makeup product. Before buying it, though, I almost never found the time to do any contouring, meaning this was a bit of a risky splurge. But I’ve used it every single day (that I’ve worn makeup) since I got it.

I had always been tempted to buy this ever since it came out, and as I got more and more interested in trying my hand at contouring. It wasn’t until the lovely Jasmine wrote a review on it that I decided I needed it and ordered it within 5 minutes of reading her post.

I’m totally in love with this palette, though there are a couple negatives for me. My biggest gripe with the palette is that there’s no mirror. The mirror in my room doesn’t get good lighting, so I’m always doing my makeup using the mirrors that come in palettes while sitting next to a window - it’s a little finicky to handle this and then another palette for its mirror. The second thing (that I actually don’t mind, but some people might) is that the highlight shades aren’t quite light enough for me - but I’m incredibly pale, so it’s pretty understandable. I don’t mind this because the two matte shades are the perfect shade match for my skin, so I like mixing them to use as normal setting powders. Despite having pink-toned skin, I’ve used the yellow powder a lot for setting the concealer around my nose - it does a fabulous job of canceling redness and making sure my concealer stays put all day. I use Sand as my everyday highlight - some people’s reviews have said that this is an intense highlight, but since it’s the same color as my skin, it just adds a subtle sheen on me that I love.

The contour shades are where Anastasia has really hit it out of the park. There are two cool-toned shades, Java and Fawn, and one warm-toned powder, Havana. I’ve been using all three of these, to my surprise. I use Fawn the most, for everyday contouring, but I actually really love using Java very lightly to just deepen whatever I want - I tend to add a little under my cheekbones after I’ve already blended Fawn there. You can see in the picture how much more pink-toned Java is than Fawn, so it complements my skin really well. I like using Havana as a traditional bronzer, since it's a little too warm on me to use as a contour.

The reason I’ve gotten even more use out of this palette than expected is because I really love using the shades as eyeshadows as well. I’ve been wearing Sand all over the lid, with one of the contour colors in the crease. I'm going away this weekend and I'm almost positive I'll just be packing this and no other eyeshadows. The powders are so creamy and soft, and they’re pigmented, but not so pigmented that you get harsh streaks of color on your face. Everything is so blendable, and I’ve caught on to contouring rather quickly with this palette. I actually have cheekbones now!

Have you tried this palette?

Mad about Mattes

March 07, 2015

This fall I absolutely fell in love with (almost) everything matte. There's just something about mattes that seem so polished and sophisticated.

Although I love the look of matte skin on others, matte foundations just make my dull, dehydrated skin look lifeless and chalky. I do love a natural/satin finish though, which for me is close enough. My two favorites are the Diorskin Nude Skin-Glowing Makeup SPF 15 and the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation. Both have a similar finish, with the Dior being slightly lighter coverage than the NARS. They're both unbelievably beautiful products, and while they both have the word "glow" in their names, for dehydrated-skinned gals like me it translates to more of a natural luminosity that just looks like your skin but better.

I really like wearing matte blushes because it means I can go a little overboard with the highlighter on my cheekbones (my favorite part of my makeup routine) without looking like a total disco ball. My most worn one is (you guessed it) the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Exposed - it's just the most beautiful, wearable shade that goes with anything and looks super subtle. Another option that's perfect for spring is theBalm's FratBoy Blush. It's the perfect peachy-pink shade with no sparkle whatsoever. And this stuff is crazy pigmented - I only have to lightly tap my brush into the pan and I've got both cheeks covered. This stuff will last forever.

Eyes and lips are where I really love me some mattes. I just recently got the Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette (review here), and it's been the perfect everyday pick to throw in my makeup bag because you can create any look with it - neutral, plum, or a classic smoky eye. Before I got my hands on the Tarte palette, I was always reaching for the Urban Decay Naked2 Basics Palette. I love the cool tones of this palette, and it's so small and compact that it's perfect for travel (I'm going away for a few days next weekend and will most likely be bringing this with me). Underneath these shadows, I love wearing the Maybelline Color Tattoo Leather in Creamy Beige - it's a perfect neutral color that looks lovely on its own or works really well as a base. I've always been a fan of the original Color Tattoos, but this one from their more matte collection has really blown me away.

My lips tend to dry out fairly easily, but I just can't give up on matte lip products. My most-worn matte lip products are all similar colors - I really jumped on that Kylie Jenner/90s nude bandwagon when that started. I've been fully converted into religiously wearing lip liner, either as a base for lipsticks or on its own. I love the MAC ones of course (Soar and Whirl are on a constant rotation), but Rush from Urban Decay and Eastend Snob from Rimmel are both constantly on my lips as well. All of them give that "my-lips-but-better" effect while really enhancing them despite me not overdrawing them.  Some other great mattes (all in just about the same color again) are the Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Sultry, the Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color in Touch of Spice, and the Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Lolita (currently dying to get my hands on the liquid lipstick version of this). They all just give a nice color to the lips without being too bold.

Are you a matte lover like me, or is it shimmer all the way?

New In: Glossier Does Masks

March 05, 2015

In my post about Glossier's Phase 1 Set (here), I mentioned that I loved the products so much that I couldn't resist ordering their newly-released face masks. I've been testing them for a couple weeks now, and I couldn't be happier with them.

Glossier has recently released two masks, designed to work in harmony together. The Mega Greens Galaxy Pack is meant to detoxify and balance the skin, with Glossier referring to it as a "juice cleanse for your face." The Moisturizing Moon Mask is designed to replenish and nourish the skin, with added ingredients to brighten the complexion as well.

I'm always wary of detoxifying/purifying masks because of my sensitive skin. I usually can't use them on my cheeks without them getting red and irritated, so I have to reserve them for use only on my nose, chin, and center of my forehead. But the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack is gentle enough that I feel comfortable using it on my whole face - a nice change, because I've realized my cheeks were getting congested too! It's a clay mask, which are known for being stripping and drying, but they use the gentlest form, white kaolin clay. It also contains leafy greens like spinach and parsley to help purify and protect, and avocado oil and aloe to condition the skin. I find it's the perfect balance to draw out impurities in my skin without stripping it at all.

The Moisturizing Moon Mask has the consistency of a thick, wobbly cream - it feels similar to The Body Shop Vitamin E Sink-in Moisture Mask. I like to spread this on in a thin layer and almost rub it in before leaving it for the suggested 20 minutes. The first time I used this, I was really surprised at how cooling it was - it's so cooling that I actually mistook the sensation for burning at first. But my skin shows no irritation whatsoever after use. After the initial shock of how cold it is, it feels amazing and the gentle tingling sensation is actually so relaxing - this mask could put me to sleep. The mask is packed with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, plant-derived squalene, honey, and aloe - totally perfect for my dried out winter skin. Along with the hydrators, it also has licorice root and lemon extract, along with Glossier's oxygenating agent, to leave you with brighter, glowing skin. It really does do all it claims - after washing it off, I'm left with plumped, radiant skin.

Glossier suggests using the masks one after the other (in the order I've mentioned them), for 20 minutes each. I tend to use them once a week, and it's become my Friday afternoon ritual when I come home from work. They're the perfect combo to cleanse and de-stress my tired skin, and I pretty much look forward to my mask time all week long (sometimes I sneak another 40 minutes in mid-week if I really need it). They work so well together that I don't think I could pick a favorite. After the success of the Phase 1 Set, Glossier has not disappointed. These masks have become a staple in my skincare routine, and my skin looks and feels its best when I've been using all of the Glossier products.

Have you tried or would you try these masks?
