When to Splurge & When to Save

March 24, 2015

Grab a snack, guys - this is going to be a bit of a long post. I talk about a lot of different products on this blog, some high end and some drugstore. I thought it might be helpful to share my opinions on when I think it’s best to splurge on a product and when it’s perfectly acceptable to get the drugstore option.

Starting with base products, I really think a foundation is a splurge-worthy purchase. High-end foundations usually have better formulations and less “filler” chemicals than cheaper options. I find that using a high end foundation (my favorites are the Diorskin Nude Skin-Glowing Makeup and the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation) on a day to day basis never feels like it’s clogging up my skin, but using a drugstore foundation everyday does and can cause breakouts (for me though, but this doesn’t mean everyone will have this experience). Concealer is another story. I’d say it’s a bit of a tie - you could go either high end or drugstore. My favorite do-it-all concealer is the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, but my all-time favorite undereye concealer is the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser. The Maybelline Fit Me Concealer is a good do-it-all option as well, and it was my go-to before I fell in love with the NARS. If you want to go high end with your undereye concealer, the Estee Lauder Double Wear Brush-On Glow BB Highlighter is amazing for covering and brightening up those undereyes.

I forgot to include my blush picks in the picture, but here we have another tie. My favorites come from more high end brands, like Tarte, Hourglass, and Daniel Sandler (see my Top 3 Blushes post), but you can get some great ones from Nyx and Revlon as well - I adore both brands’ cream blushes. Contour and bronzer are places you can save as well - as much as NARS Laguna Bronzer gets raved about, I’m perfectly satisfied with my Body Shop Honey Bronzer (it seems to have gone up in price since I last bought it though??). It comes in more than one shade so it’s easy to tailor to your skintone. Although I rave about the Anastasia Contour Kit constantly and think it’s one of my best makeup buys ever, I probably could get away with using the Nyx Powder Blush in Taupe as an everyday contour. This is the perfect cool-toned shade for paler skintones, but one that I’m not sure would work on darker skin. For highlighter though, you have to go high end - I’ve found that most drugstore options contain chunky sparkle rather than shimmer and can be chalky. The cheapest of my favorites is theBalm’s Mary-Lou Manizer, and I also adore the RMS Beauty Living Luminizer and Benefit’s Watt’s Up.

Moving on to eyes, for brows you can’t go wrong with Anastasia Beverly Hills. I swear by the Dipbrow Pomade and Brow Wiz for my brows. I’ve found that a lot of drugstore options just don’t get the color choices right. Everything in my shade of brown is just too warm and appears orange - not a good look on me. For powder eyeshadows, I’ll always splurge - you can’t beat the quality of shadows like Urban Decay’s. I’ve found it’s hard to find eyeshadows from the drugstore that are just as buttery and pigmented. But cream shadows are another story. Instead of dropping loads of money on Tom Ford or even MAC, try out the Maybelline Color Tattoos. They come in so many shades and stay put all day - even on my hooded, oily eyelids! For liner and mascara I’d say save as well - the Rimmel ScandalEyes Kohl liners are perfection, and my favorite mascara of all time (L’Oreal Miss Manga) is a third of the price of some high end mascaras.

And lastly, for lips, we have a tie. You can’t beat MAC for their lipsticks and liners, but you can also find some great picks from the drugstore as well. Nyx and Revlon are my two favorite drugstore brands for lip products.

Congratulations if you made it to the end of this post, I do apologize for it being so long. I hope it was helpful though and helped you put together your next wishlist! Do you agree with my picks?

The Updated Everyday Makeup Routine

March 21, 2015

I’ve been wanting to write up an updated makeup routine for months, seeing as my original one was one of my first posts on this blog.  But my problem was, while the products I used on a day to day basis had changed over time, the routine was pretty much the same - a quick slap of tinted moisturizer, a wash of cream eyeshadow, lashings of mascara, and done. This quick routine was my constant go-to because it was always so difficult for me to pluck up the motivation to get out of bed and get ready for the day at 6am. But lately I’ve become a bit more of an early riser, probably thanks to the fact that I keep falling asleep between 9 and 10 every night, and I’ve been putting a little more effort into my makeup every day. It’s made me feel so much more put together and ready for the day, and I’ve noticed I’ve been feeling more confident as well.

After washing my face in the morning, I always use my Glossier Priming Moisturizer - it’s become my favorite moisturizer for daytime because it’s lightweight yet still hydrating, and it gives the most amazing glow without looking greasy. On top of that I’ll add the Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint if I’m having a good skin day, or the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer if it’s a not-so-good skin day (I still can't handle the feeling of a heavy base while at work). Both leave my skin looking radiant and healthy, which is always the look I’m going for. If I have any spots or redness that need covering up, I’ll do so with my NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, and I cover up my dark circles with the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser.

I go on to my eyes next, starting with eyebrows. I’ve been using the Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade  every day, and I’ve gotten the hang of it so much now that it takes the same amount of time as using the Brow Wiz. For eyeshadow, I typically have 3 go-tos: the Tartelette Matte Eyeshadow Palette for a quick lid color and crease color (see my review here), a single MAC eyeshadow that blends out to a different color in the crease as my quicker option (check out the three I have here), and the By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Misty Rock scribbled on and blended in with my finger as the quickest option. I usually don’t do much liner, just a quick smudge of anything I have lying around into my lash line. For mascara I’ve been alternating between my two favorites: the L’Oreal Miss Manga and the Maybelline Lash Sensational (both waterproof, of course).

I haven’t been using blush really because my cheeks tend to get red on their own throughout the day, but lately I haven’t been leaving the house without using my Anastasia Contour Kit. I’m totally in love with it (see my rave review here). For every day, I just quickly blend Fawn (middle contour color) underneath my cheekbones and on my temples and dust Sand (the highlight color with shimmer) on the tops of my cheekbones. For lips, I’ve still been going for that neutral lip (I have a post coming up about some new favorites), using something like the Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Sultry or the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes.

Like I said above, spending a little extra time on my makeup in the morning makes me feel more put together and ready for the day, so I’ve been sticking to this routine for the most part. What are your everyday staples?

The Lived-In Lip

March 19, 2015

For not exactly being a bold-lip lover (on myself that is, I always wish it was something I could rock without feeling uncomfortable), I certainly own quite a few bold lip products. Determined to not let these go to waste, I’ve been wearing them a lot lately lightly dabbed onto the lips and blended in with a finger or lip brush. I really like the result it gives - a lightly stained look that really brightens up the complexion, without washing me out like a full-on bold can sometimes do.

My favorite kinds of colors to do this are by far the berry shades. It just gives a lovely rosy look that makes it seem like you’ve gorged yourself on blackberries - I especially love to emphasize this look by concentrating more color towards the middle of my lips and smudging it so it feathers to the edges. I love the look that MAC Satin Finish Lipstick in Rebel gives when smudged in, but the NARS Audacious Lipstick in Audrey and the Bite Matte Creme Lip Crayon in Framboise give similar effects as well.

In the summer, everyone goes wild for orange and coral lips. Having super cool-toned skin, orange doesn’t always look that great on me. But if I pat in the bright orange of the Bite High Pigment Pencil in Zinfandel, it becomes much more wearable as it becomes more pink/red as it melds with the natural color of my lips.

Another possibility is a bright red. One of the most flattering reds on me is the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipcolor in Cherries in the Snow. It’s almost a hot pink color rather than a red (similar to Julianne’s Red from the L’Oreal Reds Collection), so worn as a stain it becomes a flattering, complexion-brightening pink.

Although it takes a little more effort to smudge the product in the perfect amount, you’re left with a stain that lasts all day (I even have to scrub a little at my lips at the end of the day to get it all off!). It’s fun to experiment and see how many different looks you can get with one lipstick!

Do you ever wear your bold lipsticks as stains? What’s your favorite?
