Makeup Lately #4

August 22, 2015 in Makeup

Welcome to another edition of Makeup Lately, where I show you what I've been slapping on my face for the past week or two. In the past few weeks I've gotten really quick at doing my makeup, allowing me to put in a little more effort and squeeze in a few more products and still make it to work on time. It could be that a few of these products are new (and featured in my Beauty Haul from last week), so I wanted to put in the extra effort to use them, but overall I've really been loving how my makeup's been coming out.

If you read my "Your Skin But Better Bases" post this week you'll know I've fallen head over heels for the It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream. It packs a powerful punch of coverage, yet still looks incredibly natural on the skin. It gives more of a velvety/satin finish, and as I'm still really into the strobing look I've been mixing it with some of the MAC Strobe Cream. It adds a little bit more luminescence to it and makes it feel even more nourishing and creamy on the skin. This is a combination I can't see myself dropping for awhile.

I'm going to whizz right by the brows because, like always, I'm still using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Medium Brown. As for eyeshadows, I've stepped away from the ultra-metallic cream eyeshadows for now and have been embracing the most natural of looks with matte eyeshadows. Last week I was wearing the Naked2 Basics palette every day, and this week I switched it up with the Tarte Tartelette Matte Eyeshadow Palette. I just take one of the lighter creamy shades all over my lids and then blend a little of a softer brown/gray into the crease, just for the smallest hit of definition. I've been keeping the eyeshadow so simple because I've been loving painting on a bit of the L'Oreal Infallible Lacquer Liner in Blackest Black. I had all but given up on anything but pencil eyeliners, but trying a gel eyeliner again instead of liquid has helped me feel like so much less of a failure (I really, really can't get liquid eyeliner to work!). I really like the brush it comes with too, and the gel formula gives you so much control. I've got fairly hooded eyes so I can't do a dramatic wing like I'd like to, but I can still do tiny wings (a kitten eye, I like to call it) and get the wings to be even on the first try. The formula is super black and opaque, and it doesn't smear and smudge all over like some other brands I've tried. It's a super quick step for me that looks like I've spent ages on my makeup. For lashes I've been exclusively reaching for another new addition, the Maybelline Full 'n Soft Waterproof Mascara. I don't know where I first heard of this (probably Into the Gloss), but it's a great find. It gives the lashes just a natural bit of oomph without making them crispy and crunchy and holds the curl all day long. Yet another drugstore mascara added to my arsenal.

For my cheeks I've still been reaching for cream blushes, but this time it's been the Charlotte Tilbury Colour of Youth Lip & Cheek Glow. It comes in the most divine packaging first of all, being from her Norman Parkinson Collection. It's such a pretty color as well - a brightening peachy pink that really does mimic the look of a natural flush on the skin. The formula almost feels balmy rather than creamy, and it lasts throughout a whole workday without needing any touchups. I can't do my makeup without including some highlight, and lately I've been reaching for the Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop over and over. I'm sure you've heard about this one already, but it's really one of the prettiest highlights I've ever used. I could probably do with a shade that's cooler and lighter, like Moonstone or even Pearl, but I just love the believable dewiness this color adds to the skin - added to the right places on the face, you just look like you're beaming from the inside out. It's quite an intense highlight, but that hasn't stopped me from dousing myself in it before I head off to work.

As for lips, I've been reaching for a combination that's exclusively Marc Jacobs and were both impulse buys. I haven't decided yet, but I might write a whole post dedicated to the combination because it's so perfect. I line and fill in my lips with the Marc Jacobs (P)Outliner Longwear Lip Pencil in Prim(rose) (you might remember me raving about this in my July Favorites), and then go over it with the Marc Jacobs New Nudes Sheer Lip Gel in Role Play. This is a darker pinky nude that just goes perfectly with the lip liner for a slightly darker, my-lips-but-better look.

What products have you been reaching for lately?

The Pretty Pink Mask Duo

August 20, 2015 in Skincare

As you may have seen in my Beauty Haul from last weekend, I recently picked up a couple new masks for myself. I’d been using sample sizes of the Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay and the Fresh Rose Face Mask (I got the 15th Anniversary version for the most beautiful packaging I've ever seen) for awhile, and once they ran out I began really missing both from my routine. After picking up the full size of each I’m here to let you know why they’re even better together.

Let’s start with the Origins mask, or as it will now be known, the only clay mask for me. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but the from the first time I used this, I knew I’d be casting all other clay masks aside. My skin is mostly normal with the tendency to get dehydrated, but all other clay masks I’ve tried have left my skin feeling uncomfortably tight and dry. Because this mask uses the gentler rose clay and aims to brighten the skin as well as purify, this is the most comfortable clay mask I’ve ever used. It also contains little jojoba beads to help exfoliate the skin. After using this mask I’m left with brighter, smoother skin, and I’ve noticed this mask has helped with a few pesky breakouts I’ve been having at the moment.

After the Retexturing Mask, I’ve really been loving using the Fresh Rose Face Mask. Now, I’ll admit I only stumbled upon this combination because I liked how pretty the two products looked next to each other, but they really go hand in hand. After the exfoliating and purifying mask, my skin is ready for a big hit of moisture - once the first mask has sloughed off all the dead skin, my skin is ready to fully absorb whatever I use next. The Fresh Rose Face Mask feels so incredibly soothing and nourishing on the skin, and that’s because there’s not only pure rosewater in the mask but real rose petals, too. It smells absolutely heavenly (if you like the smell of roses) and just feels so relaxing to put on. This mask also has cucumber extract and aloe vera in it to really help calm and soothe redness and inflammation. It really is the perfect mask to put on in the summer heat, but it’s one I’ll definitely reach for in the winter when my skin is parched, too.

I’m a big fan of multi-step masking, and these two masks are really just a perfect fit for one another. After having a nice little pamper session and using both masks, you’ll be left with the most glowing, soothed, and healthy-looking skin. It’s hard for me to not use this combination every day!

Have you tried either of these masks?

Your Skin But Better Bases

August 18, 2015 in Makeup

Even if you’re a newer reader of my blog you’ll probably know I like to keep my base makeup looking as natural as possible. There’s just something about full-coverage bases that petrify me, and I much prefer to wear something with a lighter coverage and go in with concealer where needed. Because I keep my makeup pretty minimal on a daily basis, using a light coverage that allows my real skin to show through just really looks and feels best. As you can imagine, my collection is full to the brim with different natural-looking base products.

The Barely-There Base: I’ve been praising the Glossier gods ever since I first tried the Phase One Set back in February (see my review here). I absolutely love the Perfecting Skin Tint on the most minimal of makeup days - it gently evens out your skintone, blurs imperfections, and gives you the most glorious natural glow. It’s the lightest coverage of anything I own, but it’s still an amazing product and one of my favorites. Even if it doesn’t cover a pesky blemish, it makes the rest of my skin look so naturally lovely that I don’t even care - it really helps you embrace your natural skin, imperfections and all.

The Ultimate Glow-Giver: Given my affinity for all things glowing skin lately, I’m surprised I don’t reach for the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation every single day. It gives a light-medium coverage and feels very lightweight on the skin. It gives such a gorgeous glow to the skin - definitely one to try if you’re into the strobing trend (in fact, I used it in my Strobing FOTD).

The Nourishing One: I’ve written about the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue so many times that I’ll try to keep the praising and bowing down brief. This was really a Game-Changer for me - before I used this, I didn’t know you could actually have a tinted moisturizer type product that actually felt like it was moisturizing the skin. Maybe it’s just my dehydrated skin type, but some tinted moisturizers just felt chalky on me. This one however, smooths on beautifully and I can really feel my skin just drinking it up (in a good way, not as in it’s disappearing).

The Do-It-All Concealer: On some days I can’t be bothered with slapping something on all over my face, so on those days I’ll rely on some strategically-placed concealer (read: striped on like war paint and blended out). The one I’ve been reaching for above all others lately is the Clarins Instant Concealer. I’m so so glad I finally gave into the hype, because it’s definitely knocked the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer off the top spot for my favorite concealer (which is great, because you almost get three times as much product for only $2 more). This one packs a good amount of pigment in a water-based formula, so it feels lovely on the skin, never cakes, and blends out seamlessly. I know lots of people use the NARS one under their eyes, but I never could. The Clarins one is marketed for the undereyes, but it really does work amazingly well all over the face.

The One that Gave Me the Idea for this Post: This one could also be called “the one to fake a good skin day,” but it really is the one that inspired this post. I had been thinking of picking up the It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream with SPF 50 for awhile, and then I saw it featured on a few of my favorite blogs (Makeup-Sessions, That’s Just Fabulous, and Vivianna Does Makeup) all around the same time, so I just couldn’t resist anymore. This one, despite containing the impressively high SPF, never feels greasy or chalky on the skin, and it packs the most pigment of any other products featured here. In addition to the SPF, it also contains other anti-aging and skin-loving ingredients, and it feels just as nourishing on the skin as the bareMinerals base mentioned above. It’s marketed as full coverage, and it definitely could be built up to that, but I like to use a little and sheer it out over the face, giving me more of a light-medium coverage. Despite being able to cover so many different imperfections (I actually usually don’t need any concealer whatsoever with this), it doesn’t leave the skin looking flat or lifeless, it still really looks like your natural skin. The finish is more satin than dewy, and since I really like my dewiness I’ve been mixing it with a little bit of the MAC Strobe Cream before I apply it and it works beautifully. It does feel pretty thick initially, but it just smooths over the skin amazingly well, and once it’s blended in you can’t even feel it on your skin - quite a feat for the amount of coverage it gives.

What are your favorite “Your Skin But Better” bases?
