GUEST POST: Christmas Eve Makeup

December 24, 2015

-This post was written by my sister, Taylor-

Now I don’t know about you, but I am notorious for wearing just a little too much makeup to family parties. But now it’s my thing and I figure I may as well not stop now. That being said, this look I plan on wearing tonight for Christmas Eve is very full-on, and you may be more comfortable wearing it to an actual Christmas Party. Or home alone with your cat, I’m really in no place to judge your life choices.

Also, everyone does the classic gold eye and red lip for Christmas, so I figured I’d mix it up. Instead, it’s going to be a copper eye and a berry lip, very different and definitely original, right?

Getting to it, starting off with a light, luminous base, I’m opting for the Charlotte Tilbury “Light Wonder” Youth-Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation. This gives the skin coverage without totally masking it, and also as the name suggests, makes the skin look bright and fresh. Then, with a touch of brightening concealer under the eyes (my favorite is still the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, but the Maybelline Dream Lumi works equally well!), the base is done and you are looking even more radiant than when you started, who knew it was possible.

Next to eyebrows, and I like to make them pretty sculpted with this look since everything else is intense your eyebrows may as well be too. To achieve this, I’ve been loving the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil. Once you get over the shock of the price, this pencil is incredible I promise.

For part one of the main event, start with an eye primer on the eyes to make sure all the glitter you’re about to pile on stays through both laughing and crying (I do not know your family life, but it’s good to always be prepared). Then, using a flat brush I’ll press on Colourpop Super Shock Shadow in the shade LaLa (but any metallic copper shadow should work) to the outer half of my eyelid. On the inner half, I’ll dust on a light, glittery shade, like the lightest out of the Charlotte Tilbury Fallen Angels Eyeshadow Quad. To give a little more drama, add a touch of a darker, more bronze-y shade (one can also be found in the quad I’m using) to the very outer corner of the eye. Then, just blend blend blend until everything looks seamless. To finish, smudge a bit of a golden eyeliner, like the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Smog, into the upper lashline.

Going back to the face, I’ve found this look looks best with a little bit of contouring. I know the thought of this can be scary, but don’t worry I believe in you. Using a shade that’s more gray than orange, such as in the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow Face Sculpt and Highlight, lightly dust in the hollow from the center of the ear until you’re even with the outer corner of the eye. Then, if you’re anything like Kelsey or me you’ll pile on the highlighter until you resemble a disco ball. I like to use the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in the shade moonstone. And with a touch of berry-toned blush, the face is done. You look great.

Finally we reach the lips. My current favorite Berry shade is the Sephora Cream Lip Stain in shade number 14, Blackberry Sorbet. Now I’m sure you’ve heard Kelsey sing the praises of this liquid lipstick, but let me just reiterate it again. This is incredible, does not move, and dries very matte. The only thing is this dark shade can get a little difficult to apply neatly, but if you take your time you’ll be thankful you did.

And voila! You are now ready for any Christmas Party you could ever be invited to, and will stand out from all the other beautiful women wearing red lipstick. But you should go talk to them and find out what shade of red that is, because it’s equally beautiful and looks great on them.

Three Christmas Looks

December 22, 2015

I'm not really doing anything for Christmas other than watching movies in my pajamas and eating my weight in Santa-shaped chocolates, but I wanted to put together three different Christmas looks depending on what you were getting up to. They go from barely there to more glam, so I think I've got you covered for any occasion.

STAYING IN: NO MAKEUP-MAKEUP

This is the look I'll be going for on Christmas Day, if I even wear any makeup at all. Usually if I'm just sitting around at home I'll go for a no-makeup day, but on a special day like Christmas it can be fun to get a little bit dolled up. This look calls for a barely-there base, like the Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint, fluttery lashes via the Clinique Lash Power Feathering Mascara, and soft pink lips and cheeks courtesy of the Stila Convertible Color in Lilium and the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in 01 Rose Shimmer or Dior Addict Lip Glow. For a dewy but subtle highlight, the rms beauty Living Luminizer is the best of the best. This look is fresh and healthy looking, perfect for any Christmas morning pictures that might be snapped.

FAMILY PARTY: EVERYDAY APPROPRIATE

For something like a family party, I like to get a little more dolled up without going overboard. It's usually a look that I wouldn't feel uncomfortable wearing on a day to day basis. I actually had one of two (or three) family parties on Saturday (for the best family tradition - we go to some family members' houses to check out their Christmas trees and decorations before having a big dinner and party at the end), so this is what I wore then. I went with a slightly more dramatic eye and a nude-y lip, since I knew I'd be gorging myself on ham and scalloped potatoes and lipstick would be no match. A good base here would be one that you can't really feel on the skin but still evens everything out, like the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water. For my slightly glammed-up eye look I used the Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in Mona Lisa, a quick smudge of brown eyeliner, and a few coats of the Maybelline Full 'N Soft Waterproof Mascara - it's similar to the Clinique offering used above, but a little more dramatic. On the lips I went for the MAC Lipstick in Patisserie, the ultimate MLBB shade, and swiped on a bit of the Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight.

FANCY PARTY: GLITZ AND GLAM

Now I haven't been to a fancy party in quite some time, but if I was I'd go all out with the shimmer and red lips. This look would call for a more polished base like the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation, a shimmery neutral eye - the NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Himalia used wet would be perfect - and a red lip. For a bright, true red I'd go for the Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red (01), and for something deeper and more berry-toned I'd pick the NARS Audacious Lipstick in Audrey - my favorite. This more glam look would of course call for some contouring and highlighting, and since I'm a bit of a noob I'd go for the Kevyn Aucoin Creamy Glow Duo and use the cream contour - it's really natural-looking so it's not easy to mess it up. To brighten my undereyes and keep it from looking like I'm usually in bed by 10 I'd go for the Estee Lauder Double Wear Brush-On Glow BB Highlighter. And if I'm going for an intense highlight, how could I not reach for the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop? It's seriously stunning.

What are your plans for Christmas?

The Anti-Redness Warriors

December 19, 2015

I've mentioned time and again that I suffer from bouts of splotchy redness in my skin. I'm lucky in that I don't get many blemishes, but the redness sometimes can drive me absolutely crazy. I feel as if I may have developed a bit of rosacea in recent months. I've managed to gather quite a bit of products that really help to tone down the redness and get me on my way to even skin again.

The Midday Soother | I've mentioned the Glossier Soothing Face Mist several times on the blog before, but it really is my favorite face mist. Though pretty much all of the mists I've tried feel quite refreshing and soothing on the skin, this one really does calm it down when it's having an angry red flare-up. I had a phone interview a few weeks ago and the anxiety of it was literally turning my cheeks purple and burning hot. After the call I doused myself in this, and my skin quickly returned back to normal. I'm never without one in my bag now.

The Soothing Masks | I'm probably going to use the word "soothing" in this post, just a heads up. I mentioned my two favorite masks for hydrating the skin and calming down redness in my Winter Skin Essentials post - the Fresh Rose Face Mask and the Belif First Aid Anti-Hangover Soothing Mask. Both are really cooling gel formulas that sink into the skin and get to work. These both feel phenomenal after a stressful day. The Fresh one feels like such a luxury with that beautiful rose scent, but the Belif one is amazingly effective at getting rid of redness, and it leaves the skin feeling so dewy afterward. If my skin is feeling both red and spotty, I'll go for the Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask. This is probably my favorite mask of all time, as it just does everything - cleanses, hydrates, and soothes. I love this one after a long day of sitting in front of my space heater.

The Overnight Relief | Speaking of things I've mentioned many times before, I'm still harping on about how great the Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil is. It's not too heavy of an oil - I'm sure it would work well on someone with more oily skin, but it's also moisturizing enough for a dry-skinned gal like me. The blue tansy it contains really helps to calm angry skin, and whenever I use this at night, I'll wake up the next morning with clearer, more even skin. It's seriously a little miracle worker in my book.

The Morning Fix | Another godsend from Glossier is their Priming Moisturizer. I've lost track of how many bottles of this baby I've gone through, but it's definitely my favorite moisturizer for daytime. I use it every morning without fail, whether I'm planning on wearing makeup or not, because it just plumps everything up and magically reduces redness (Glossier says their anti-redness complex is actually a mixture of tea and honey extracts). It's such a lightweight cream but layers up over drier areas nicely, and it leaves the skin with the most glorious dewy sheen.

The Camouflaging Powders | If, after employing all these skin-loving goodies, I'm still left with some redness (the sides of my nose can be quite pesky sometimes), I cover it up with some concealer set with a yellow-toned powder. Based on the color wheel, products with a more yellow tone will better camouflage redness, so even though my skin is quite pink-toned (even without the redness), I still go for the yellows. For an all over powder I just can't get enough of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused Light. This one is quite subtle, but it does take the edge off of my Rudolph nose. For more heavy duty redness I'll use the Banana powder from the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit. This is meant to be a highlighting shade, but as I'm so fair it works as an all-over setting powder.

What do you reach for if you've got redness creeping on your face?
