The Perfect Summer Mask That Smells Like Fall

July 21, 2016

I've gone on and on about how much I love to try and brighten my skin as much as possible in the summer. I love a good exfoliator - I'm probably not alone when I say that I get extra paranoid of my skin getting congested and clogged when the weather warms up. Layers of thick sunscreen mixed with sweat and makeup just sounds like a breakout waiting to happen to me, so I always look for something that will really help to clear out my pores and rid my skin of any dead gunk. Enter the Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask - a product I've seen in countless autumn roundups, but one that I'm making a case for this summer.

I totally understand why everyone talks about this in the fall - it smells just like pumpkin pie filling, so having it on your face really conjures up images of pumpkin patches and Thanksgiving. But I say why wait until October to break this baby out? Your skin can benefit from it now.

This powerful mask exfoliates the skin in three ways: using pumpkin enzymes, AHAs, and aluminum oxide. It's meant to work as your own at-home peel. The directions say to apply a thin layer to the skin and massage it in with wet fingers using gentle circling motions - this will activate the polishing powers of the aluminum oxide crystals. You can then leave it on for 3-7 minutes, depending on how sensitive your skin is, and then rinse it off.

I only leave it on for about 3 minutes because MAN does this stuff tingle. It doesn't feel irritating at all, but I'll be honest in that it is quite a strong tingle on my skin. I've got slightly sensitive skin, though. Despite leaving it on for the minimum suggested time, I've been completely wowed by the results of this mask. My skin is a little flushed for an hour or two after rinsing, but it isn't sore or hot to the touch or anything. I can't believe how smooth my skin feels after washing this off - it especially helps where I can get some uneven texture on my chin. The smoothing results last a few days too, so I'm not tempted to overuse the mask and overexfoliate my skin. I've been loving doing this mask on a Sunday afternoon once I'm home for the day because I know my makeup will apply beautifully all week afterward.

The reason why I'm most impressed, though, is because of its effect on breakouts. The kind of breakouts I get are those painful under-the-skin bumps that will honestly last months sometimes. I had one pop up last Friday afternoon (I literally felt it start aching on my face while driving home from work), so I used the mask that night. When I woke up on Saturday morning, the spot had already come to a head! That usually, again, takes months to happen or never happens at all. On Saturday night the spot popped on its own while I was washing my face, and now it's almost completely gone. This one instance alone has totally confirmed this is something I'll always want in my skincare rotation.

Have you tried this mask? What do you use to get rid of breakouts?

And heads up - I've linked the product from Sephora above since that's easier for most people, but if you can get it on Amazon, it's much cheaper there (that's where I got mine)!

Mid-Year Favorites

July 19, 2016

I had my mid-year review at work last week, and it gave me the idea to round up my favorite products of the year thus far. This way, I feel like my end-of-year favorites won't be as cluttered, and I won't leave anything out. I've been trying so many products this year alone, so it was tough to narrow it down this far.

I've tried to stay relatively consistent with my skincare so far this year, but it's just so much fun to try new products that I haven't been the greatest at that. But I've still found four staples that I'll use almost every day. For cleansing, I can't get enough of the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. It feels super soothing, making it perfect for morning or night, and it also does a great job at removing makeup. It also doesn't strip my skin at all but leaves it feeling softer than before I washed it. I've been using the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Liquid (review) almost every single morning as my serum step - it really helps my skin stay moisturized throughout the day, despite spending all day in a humidity-controlled cement lab. In the winter I was using the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream (review) almost exclusively every day, but now that the weather has heated up, I've also fallen in love with a slightly lighter option of the Purlisse Blue Lotus Balancing Moisturizer.* They both feel quite gentle on the skin while still being ultra-nourishing.

I don't like leaving the house without doing something to my brows, so I think I've literally used the Glossier Boy Brow in Brown every single day. I use this as the first step of filling in my brows on a more made-up day or on its own on a more minimal day. It really makes my brows look fuller and fluffier, but it doesn't feel crunchy or stiff. I love it.

I've been so into bronzing and giving my skin a glow this year. I've been loving the Milk Makeup Matte Bronzer (first impression | review) the most so far this year as it's so easy to use. It's such a creamy formula, so it glides onto the skin and blends out so easily. It makes it so easy to add some dimension to my face, even on a rushed morning. For a glow I've been totally obsessed with the Tom Ford Skin Illuminating Powder Duo since I got it for my birthday in April. It really is as stunning as it looks. The darker shade is more of a rose gold highlight rather than a bronzer, so I like using it as a blush/bronzer topper and then applying the lighter color on my cheekbones. It really does help to perfect the skin.

Last year I was all about that neutral, '90s lip, and while I still do love that, I've been opting for some more nude shades this year. My favorite has come in the form of the Jouer Lip Creme Liquid Lipstick (review) in Lychee - it's a beautiful pinky nude, and the formula of these is just so nice. For a creamier pick, I really love the Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer in Nude Pop, which is another really pretty pink nude. This is still quite pigmented, so it does pale down the color of my lips a little bit. My favorite sheer nude this year has been the Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani Lipstick in Ex-Girlfriend (I'm pretty sure they re-released this shade in their Vice Lipsticks). It's the perfect mix of a pink and peachy nude, and it has some subtle golden shimmer that helps to enhance the lips. When I'm running out the door and don't have time to think about choosing a lip product, I'll always grab this.

What are your favorites of the year so far?

Summer Lip Picks

July 16, 2016 in Makeup

I've already mentioned here and there that I like switching my lip products to mostly more sheer products for summer. I just love the look of natural glowy skin with a sheer lip that almost has a blurred edge. I also have found the perfect coral-y color that actually works on me, and a more subtle take on the oh-so-trendy metallic lip.

Lancome Juicy Shaker, 'Vanilla Pop' | I'm here to tell you that all the hype around these is real. The packaging is cute and does seem gimmick-y, but it actually is a really great product and perfect for summer. They're quite sheer but leave a lovely glossy sheen on the lips, and they feel decently moisturizing. The shade Vanilla Pop is a nice pinky neutral shade that just enhances my natural lip color. After trying a more natural shade, I really want to try one of the brighter ones - what's your favorite?

Glossier Generation G, 'Like' | If you've wanted to get your hands on this, run, don't walk and pick it up because all shades of the Generation G lipsticks are currently in stock on Glossier's website. These are such cool products - they apply smoothly and a little sheer like a balm, but they're totally matte so they end up looking like a stain. The shade Like leaves a lovely pink flush to the lips. The two brighter shades, Crush and Jam, would also be great summer staples as they give you that "just ate a popsicle" look.

Glossier Flavored Balm Dotcom, 'Cherry' | I've freaked out about these balms for such a long time now, but the slightly red-tinted Cherry flavor makes the perfect summer addition. It gives you a similar flushed look to the Generation G, but with the intensely hydrating punch of the Balm Dotcom. It smells like cherry candy too, which helps.

Top to Bottom: Lancome Vanilla Pop, Glossier Like, Glossier Cherry Balm Dotcom, Covergirl Candy, Urban Decay Sheer Liar, Charlotte Tilbury Super Cindy, Jouer Praline

Covergirl Oh Sugar Lip Balm, 'Candy' | I picked this up on a whim and ended up really falling in love. The packaging feels super cheap, but it is drugstore, so it's just the product that counts here. Once this is applied, it genuinely feels like the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments (which I'm sure is what Covergirl was going for). The Candy shade, again (sorry for sounding like a broken record here), gives a nice flush of color to the lips. This is a sheer pinky-red shade similar to the effect of the Glossier Cherry Balm Dotcom. I have the Caramel shade as well, which I'd definitely recommend if you're looking for a warm nude shade.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick, 'Sheer Liar' | In case you haven't noticed, I can't shut up about this lipstick. I think this is what has really gotten me obsessed with these more sheer shades. It's such a pretty nude/neutral shade that's just the perfect mix of pink, peach, and brown. The sheer formula isn't nearly as sheer as my other picks, but it still allows my natural lip shade to show through and adds a lovely sheen. When I wrote my review on these lipsticks I said the shade Backtalk was my most worn, but this is quickly surpassing it.

Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipstick, 'Super Cindy' | I couldn't resist Charlotte Tilbury's latest lipstick launch. Every shade is inspired by a famous woman, and there's something for everyone. I ended up getting two nude(ish) shades (of course), Kim K.W. and Super Cindy. The Super Cindy shade is described as Cindy Crawford's perfect brown-y nude, but it actually is quite peach. Peachy shades usually don't suit me, but this one actually does! I had to include this since peachy shades are a cliche staple for summer, but I've never found one that I like to wear until now. This has the beautiful Matte Revolution formula that's such a comfortable matte but still lasts such a long time on the lips.

Jouer Liquid Lipstick, 'Praline' | I resisted this beautiful metallic bronze-rose shade the first time I ordered some Jouer liquid lipsticks, but I had convinced myself I needed it by the time I made a second order. It's a perfect way to try out the new metallic lip craze because it's quite a natural-looking shade if you were to take out the shimmer - just a nice neutral. Metallic liquid lipsticks can sometimes be finicky and streaky, but this one applies beautifully and has the same lovely formula as Jouer's other shades. These are definitely up there for my favorite liquid lipstick formula.

What are your favorite lip products for summer?
