The Winter Anti-Frizz Routine | AD

December 21, 2016 in Hair

I don't talk much about hair care on my little corner of the internet, and that's because I'm pretty clueless when it comes to my hair. It's wavy, poofy, and constantly frizzy, and I don't really have time to figure out how to beat it into submission. Now that winter is coming (did you say that in a Ned Stark voice?), it's just been feeling so brittle and dry, causing more frizz. Lately though, I've come across a routine that really cuts down on the frizz and dryness, and it's been giving me silky smooth hair that's super easy to style.

I've never been super loyal to one shampoo/conditioner brand, but the bits I've been trying from Aussie have really changed my mind there. I like to alternate the shampoos and conditioners I use - I feel like it keeps my hair "on its toes" if you will, and my hair seems to be able to go longer between washes without getting greasy. The Aussie Total Miracle 7N1 Shampoo & Conditioner are great for when my hair's starting to feel a little frazzled and damaged. Just one use and everything feels back to normal. I alternate it with the Aussie Moist Shampoo & Conditioner. This one is going to be perfect once there's even more of a chill in the air - it leaves my hair feeling SO soft, smooth, and hydrated. Sometimes my scalp gets itchy from dryness, and this shampoo/conditioner duo even helps that.

Once a week, to keep my hair hydrated, I like to use a deep conditioning hair mask. The Aussie 3-Minute Miracle Strong Conditioning Treatment is perfect for this. I love that it only takes three minutes so I can get out of the shower and into cozy pajamas as quickly as possible. My hair feels so healthy after using this, and I can really tell it's reducing damage. It claims to make the hair 10x stronger against damage than non-conditioning shampoo, and I really think it's been living up to those claims. I immediately notice a difference as my hair is drying - it feels so much smoother!

I typically let my hair air-dry, and a product that I really think has allowed me to do that without needing much of any styling afterward is the Aussie Instant Freeze Sculpting Hair Gel. When I think of gel, I think of the super crunchy ringlet curls I had to do when I was a Party Girl in the Nutcracker when I was 10 years old, but this is a whole different ballgame. It doesn't leave my hair crunchy at all. It helps to define and bring out my waves in a really flattering way (before I started incorporating the gel into my routine, I had cowlicks and weird kinks in my hair galore and could never wear my hair down). And, my favorite thing, it keeps my freshly-washed hair from getting puffy as it dries. I apply such a small amount, maybe about two pea-sized dollops, when my hair is about 50% dry. If I do blowdry my hair, it really helps cut down on that puffiness as well. To finish my hair, I'll run a pump of a hair oil through the lengths to smooth down any flyaways, but I've noticed I don't always need this after using the Aussie products!

You can find Aussie's 3 Minute Miracle Strong Conditioning Treatment, Instant Freeze Sculpting Hair Gel, Aussie Moist Shampoo & Conditioner, Aussie Total Miracle 7N1 Shampoo & Conditioner, and many more products on Amazon. Having all your hair products shipped right to your door is a huge time-saver - no need to run out to the store when I unexpectedly run out anymore, because having backups is so easy!

What products do you use to keep your hair looking healthy and frizz-free?

Festive Look #2: Copper Wing & Plum Lip

December 20, 2016

I said in my first festive makeup look last week that I was going to try to do more, and I'm so glad I was able to do this one. There won't be any more Christmas looks as I won't have good lighting for the rest of the week before Christmas for photos (I leave for work in the dark and come home from work in the dark), but I'm going to do another look or two next week for New Years. For this one, I was really inspired by the Pat McGrath Metalmorphosis 005 Kits (review), so I decided to try doing a copper winged eyeliner paired with a deep plum lip.

Because the eyes and lips were going to both be a little dramatic, I wanted a really fresh, simple, yet perfected base. Once again I started with the Marc Jacobs Under(cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer, and then I used the Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation. It looks just like skin, but it can still be built up to a medium-full coverage. I concealed dark circles and any areas of redness with the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Aquacealer - this is still one of my favorites, and I chose it because of its similar finish to the foundation.

I used a bit of a heavier hand then usual with my cheek products because I didn't want the bold lip to wash me out. I did some light contouring using the Pixi MultiBalm in Sheer Sculpt - it's such a good shade for contouring, and it's a beautiful formula. I also used the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Mood Exposure because I thought the mauve tone would go well with the plum lip. And for highlighter, I topped off my cheekbones with a dusting of the Cover FX The Perfect Light Highlighting Powder in Moonlight.

For my brows, I used the Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade, and it made me fall in love with it all over again - perfect timing because my Brow Wiz just ran out. I didn't use any eyeshadow for this look and instead just went straight to the wing. I started with a regular black liquid liner, the Surratt Beauty Auto-Graphique Eyeliner in Chat Noir - this stuff is seriously magical. I'm usually terrible at winged liner (which is why I wasn't publicly committing to this look earlier), but I was able to get two even wings that actually looked good on my first try. It's definitely down to that brush tip on the pen. To do the copper wing, I just had to use the Pat McGrath Metalmorphosis 005 Kit. I dipped the Real Techniques Detailer Brush (from the Eye Starter Set) into the Mehron Mixing Liquid that comes with the set and then picked up some of the Copper glitter pigment. It immediately transformed the powder into a smooth liquid/cream that was actually really easy to apply. I just followed above the black line I had already created. I had to layer the pigment a bit because it kept getting a little muddy with the black, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. I finished my eyes by tightlining them and then using a coat of the Benefit Roller Lash Mascara.

As soon as I settled on the idea of a plum lip, I knew I had to use the NARS Velvet Lip Glide in Toy - it's just the most beautiful deep purple shade. To make application easier and more even, I started with a layer of the Milk Makeup Lip Color in Grrrl - it's a really similar shade to Toy, but just not as deep. It was then super easy to layer Toy over the top, and it brought out the plum color even more.

I'm so super thrilled with this look - I wasn't sure it was going to turn out any good but I'm really pleased with it.

Also, I'd highly recommend any of the Pat McGrath Kits as a last-minute gift for someone who loves playing with makeup or metallic looks. I'm not even into super dramatic makeup most of the time but I'm still loving the Everything Kit. They're all still in stock at Sephora, and you'll get it delivered in time for Christmas if you get the 2-day shipping!

What's your go-to holiday makeup look?

New In Beauty

December 16, 2016 in Makeup, Skincare

I've currently got piles of beauty products to try in the next few weeks - it's overflowed into my living room, much to my boyfriend's chagrin. I figured to give myself a kick of motivation to start working my way through it, I'd put together a post showcasing the things I'll be trying. I'm probably sounding super ungrateful but I really am SO thankful for the things I get sent and the opportunities I get from this blog, and from all of you. Sappiness aside, let's get into the products.

THE BODY SHOP | I received a super exciting package with some new makeup bits from The Body Shop recently. There are new eyeshadow quads, a liquid bronzer, and eyeshadow sticks. I'm super excited about this Down To Earth Gold eyeshadow quad, and they have the perfect amount of pigment and shimmer for an everyday look. I'm thinking of doing a more lowkey Christmas look next week, and if I get around to it, I'm going to be using this! I've also been loving their Eye Color Stick in Gold - it makes a perfect base for the eyeshadow quad and helps keep the eyeshadow in place. And I'm obsessed with the new Honey Bronze Drops of Sun - it's a slightly transparent, gel-like fluid that looks like such a natural bronzed look on the skin. I might even prefer it to my NARS Liquid Laguna!

RODIAL | I got a care package of some of Rodial's best-sellers as an intro to the brand. I've always wanted to try Rodial but had just never gotten around to it yet. I'm so happy with the Eyeshadow Palette - it's full of the most beautiful neutrals that look perfect for everyday or for slightly more dramatic looks. They're really smooth and pigmented, too. I also got a few of the new Suede Lips, and my favorite shade has been Big Apple. It's a really pretty mauve/berry that I'm always all about.

PHYSICANS FORMULA | I'm super into cushion foundations at the moment, so I'm excited to try the new Mineral Wear ABC Cushion Foundation. I've swatched it on my hand and it feels slightly more matte than the other cushions I've tried, so I'll report back. I'm also going to be trying some bits from their Argan Wear collection - the mascara, kajal eyeliner, and lip oil.

THE BEAUTY CROP | I've got the cutest set of lip crayons from The Beauty Crop to try out. In the Pucker Up & Play Set you get three PBJ Smoothie Sticks in Guava Nice Day, Raisin the Roof, and Peach Please. They're such pretty shades for everyday, and the formula feels super lovely on the lips. I'm going to be doing a longer review on these with lip swatches, so keep your eyes peeled!

BUTTER LONDON | I was absolutely spoiled by Butter London - they sent along some of their Patent Shine 10x Nail Polishes to try (pictured are Yummy Mummy and Fancy), as well as a few Plush Rush Lipsticks. My nails are in horrendous condition right now, so I'm looking forward to painting them and getting them looking nice again. The lipsticks also have a nice formula too - not glossy, but not matte, and the shades Lucky and Daring are super pretty.

NATURA BISSE | I was sent the absolutely beautiful Diamond Extreme Night Dual Treatment from Natura Bisse, and I really can't wait to try them. Using the oil and mask together is meant to repair and rejuvenate the skin overnight. I'm cracking into these as soon as possible and will report back on how they work for my skin.

MAD HIPPIE | Last but not least, I received a few bits from Mad Hippie Skincare. I had heard of the brand before, but only briefly. So far I'm utterly in love with the Cream Cleanser and the Vitamin A Serum. The cleanser has been my favorite for a second cleanse or a morning cleanse - it contains jojoba, green tea, and macadamia oil, so it feels super nourishing on the skin while it cleanses. It's a winter staple for sure. And the Vitamin A Serum gently exfoliates and nourishes the skin, and I'm honestly noticing results similar to the Sunday Riley Luna Oil.

What new products have you been trying out?

All products mentioned have been sent to me for consideration, but all opinions are my own. Please see my disclaimer for more information.
