The Primer Edit

February 09, 2017 in Makeup

Up until a few months ago, I wasn't a primer-wearer at all. In fact, I don't think I even owned more than one for awhile, and I rarely used that one anyway. I don't know what changed, but now I'm all about prepping my skin for makeup not only with skincare, but also a good primer.

THE ONE THAT'S SKINCARE | I have a few that are skincare, but the most skincare-y of all is the Onomie Powerful Priming Serum* (review). I use this as my serum step in the morning and it really helps to perk up and hydrate the skin. It has a subtle shimmer in it as well that gives the skin a lovely glow. Over time, I have noticed skincare benefits such as smoother and more even skin.

THE DEWY ONES | The other two that are more like skincare products than primers are the Glossier Priming Moisturizer and Priming Moisturizer Rich* (review). They both work really well to plump up the skin and majorly diminish redness, so choosing one just depends on your skin's needs. The original Priming Moisturizer is a thinner lotion that feels cooling and soothing on the skin, while the new Rich version is thicker and more hydrating. I actually love using the Rich as my day cream and then following up with the original moisturizer as my primer a few minutes later - dewiest. skin. ever. You can get 20% off your first Glossier order by shopping with me here.

THE GLOWY ONE | I'm not exactly sure where the line between dewy and glowy is, but the Becca Backlight Priming Filter is for sure on the glowy side. As the name suggests, it gives the skin a beautiful, lit-from-within glow that doesn't read as too "disco ball." This is one I reach for without fail after a late night - if my skin is feeling particularly dull and dehydrated, I'll mix it in with the Glossier Priming Moisturizer Rich.

THE PLUMPING ONE | The Marc Jacobs Under(cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer is the one that got me back into primers. I picked it up in the Sephora VIB Sale and promptly fell in love with it. It's a thin lotion consistency, like the Priming Moisturizer, but it somehow plumps and smooths out my skin even more. It just makes my skin feel so pillow-y and moisturized, and this one in particular really prolongs the wear of my foundation.

THE BLURRING ONE | My latest primer obsession is the Milk Makeup Blur Stick (review). It really does everything it says, blurring pores and fine lines and controlling excess oil. It somehow also really evens out my skintone despite being clear, so it's basically just magic. I love that it's oil- and silicone-free, so it hasn't been breaking me out. This is the first blurring and smoothing primer that I've been able to use without breaking out in painful cystic spots around my nose.

THE CALMING ONE | The Cover FX Calming Primer is the latest addition to my stash of primers, but it's already been well-loved. Like the name suggests, it calms the skin down using skincare ingredients like Endothelyol and St. John's Wort. If I'm having an especially stressful day, this one is perfect as it instantly soothes my flushed skin. I like using this one on no-makeup days on its own, too, just to even out my skintone without adding any coverage. The consistency, again, is a lightweight cream that sinks into the skin beautifully.

What's your favorite primer?

Smashbox Cover Shot Eye Palette | Golden Hour

February 08, 2017 in Makeup

I've been on quite the eyeshadow kick lately. I went from not wearing any every single day to hoarding a bunch of palettes. One of my latest favorites has been the Smashbox Cover Shot Eyeshadow Palette in Golden Hour - the Cover Shot Palettes are a collection of seven small palettes in various colorways to create different looks. I was immediately drawn to the shades in the Golden Hour palette, and once I swatched it in store it just had to be mine.

The Golden Hour palette comes with two matte shades and six shimmer shades, ranging from a pale champagne to a deep eggplant. The shades included go beautifully together, and as the name suggests, remind me of a sunset. If you were looking to do more elaborate looks, you may need to dip into another palette for more mattes, but for the simple looks I do on a day to day basis, the included shades are perfect. They're super soft and buttery to the touch and blend well without any patchiness. The deeper shades have slightly less pigmentation than the lighter ones, but for someone like me who doesn't like to do dramatic eye looks, this is perfect and actually makes me more likely to use every shade in the palette. They crease a tiny bit on me by the end of the day, but there's only one or two eyeshadow formulas I've found that don't crease at all on me, so minimal creasing is fine in my book.

I've heard some people complain about the packaging, and while it does feel a little cheap, it's not a dealbreaker for me. I don't feel like it's going to fall apart on me, and I love that it's a good size to take along with you when traveling - it's about the size of the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palettes. The holographic design on the lid is a super cool touch, too. Overall I've really been loving this palette, so much so that I convinced my sister she needed one in her life (she went for the Soft Light palette). As someone who doesn't wear tons of eyeshadow I appreciate the curated selection of shades, small size, and more affordable price tag.

Have you tried any of the Cover Shot Eye Palettes?

Choosing My Wedding Makeup From My Current Collection

February 07, 2017 in Makeup

I've been engaged for a little over two months now, but it's only just starting to feel real now. I just went to try on wedding dresses on Saturday, and I ended up getting my dream dress - it was the first one I tried on! I tried on five or six more, but I knew right away the first one was the one. This weekend we're starting to look at venues, so it's really got me in the wedding mindset. I've been poring over my makeup collection looking for products I'd possibly use on my wedding day, and I think I've found a nice roundup so far.

BASE

As far as primers go, my skin responds best to ones that provide hydration. My favorite at the moment is more of a moisturizer, but it perfectly preps skin for makeup. I just can't stop using the Glossier Priming Moisturizer Rich* morning and night - it perfectly plumps up my skin, gives it a dewy glow, and diminishes a lot of my redness. For foundation, I've found the most beautiful combination on my skin is the Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation and the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. Using them both together gives the skinlike finish of the Aqua Foundation while also having the longevity and luminosity of the Luminous Silk. If I'm not feeling so extra on the day (but really when else can you be super extra if not your wedding day?), I'll go for Luminous Silk on its own for sure.

EYESHADOW

As of right now, I'm without a doubt going to be using the Marc Jacobs Style Eye Con No 7 Plush Eyeshadow Palette in The Lover. I already know I'm not going to want a dramatic smokey eye as that's not the kind of look I go for every day, so these lovely soft pink shades will be perfect. These shadows also last really well on me throughout the day with minimal creasing, so I'm thinking it would be a good choice because of that, too.

CHEEKS

Since I'm thinking my eyeshadow will be soft neutral pink shades, it's only fitting that my blush would be the same. The Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Blush in First Love is just the most beautiful thing. It doesn't look like much in the pan, but it adds the most natural flush to the cheeks. I'll probably get super flushed on the day, since that always happens when I'm the center of attention, so I don't want anything too pink. CT's got me covered. I also want a beautiful glow, and I tried a new combination of highlighters the other day that's already become a favorite. I started with a sheered out layer of the Sephora Collection Radiant Luminizing Drops in Morning Light - I applied a drop to my hand, dabbed a bit on my cheekbones, and then blended it with a Beautyblender. Once it was set, I went over it with a tiny bit of the Jouer Powder Highlighter in Rose Quartz with a fan brush. The result was a beautiful, but still natural/dewy glow.

LIPS

I really want to make my way back to the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in New York City to create a custom lipstick for the occasion, but if that doesn't happen, my lipstick of choice will without a doubt be the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk. It's such a beautiful pink nude shade that enhances the lips and doesn't make me look washed out. I think it'll complement this pinky look nicely, too. And of course I'd need to use the matching Lip Cheat, too.

What products are your go-tos for special occasions? Do you ever think about the products you'll wear if/when you get married?
