The Twenty-Fifth Birthday Splurge

April 11, 2017 in Makeup, Skincare

One of my goals for the year was to spend less money on new beauty products. And so far, I'm failing miserably. I had been good (well, better than usual) for a couple weeks, and since 25 is kind of a big birthday, I decided to treat myself to a few things using some of my birthday money. I'm hoping this will be my "last hurrah" of sorts, especially because we set a date for our wedding (!!) so saving money for that feels a whole lot more real now.

La Mer The Bronzing Powder | I tried to resist this one, I really did. I certainly didn't need another bronzer, let alone one this expensive. But it's just so beautiful. I can see myself using this for years to come, and it makes me feel so happy to take it out and use it. It's such a lovely shade when all four sections are mixed together - not too orange, not too gray, with just a hint of glowy-ness. It's super smooth and pigmented and blends over the skin effortlessly. It does have a bit of perfume to it, so that's something to keep in mind if your skin is sensitive to that.

Givenchy Le Prisme Blush, 'Vintage Pink' | I found this beauty while perusing Sephora's website and decided the shade Vintage Pink had to be mine - I've been into brighter blushes lately. The formula of this is insane, so much softer and smoother than I was expecting! It kicks up a little bit of powder, but that's not something that ever annoys me about a product. I convinced my sister she needed the peach shade, and she vouches for how gorgeous it is, too.

By Terry Rouge Expert Click Stick, 'Bare Me' | I had heard nothing but rave reviews about these lipsticks, and being a fan of the few By Terry products I've tried, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and try one out for myself. I of course chose one of the nudes, Bare Me, and it's a beautiful color - not too beige, not too pink, just right. The formula is lovely as well. It glides onto the lips so comfortably and smoothly, and yet it's quite matte. It doesn't feel dry at all, though - this may be a dangerous new find.

Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel | Despite knowing this wouldn't be hydrating enough for my skin type on its own (gels never are), I wanted to try this to layer underneath more hydrating creams as more of a serum step. I had tried it on my hand recently in Sephora and was amazed at how smooth my skin instantly felt. So far it's been love, as is everything else I've tried from Drunk Elephant.

Dior Addict Lip Glow Pomade | This just looked too chic to ignore. I'm a huge fan of the original Dior Lip Glow balm, so I needed to try its new(ish) gloss counterpart. It doesn't really give my lips a color like the original does, but it's super comfortable and a beautiful gloss nonetheless. It feels quite nourishing on the lips and not sticky whatsoever - it's one of those "cushion-y" glosses.

Milk Makeup Eye Vinyl, 'Bridge' | I'm suddenly VERY into the glossy eyelid look (more on that soon), so I wanted to try one of the Eye Vinyls from Milk Makeup. I like that it's in a convenient click-pen so I can use it on the go without my fingers getting sticky. The color bridge is a sheer nude color that pretty much looks like a clear gloss - just what I wanted. I use a thin layer, but it doesn't feel sticky or goopy at all and gives me that editorial look I've been wanting.

Kevyn Aucoin The Exotique Diamond Eye Gloss | Even though I got the Milk Makeup product, I just couldn't resist this one. I had been adding it and removing it from my cart since it came out, so I finally decided to bite the bullet. This one is GORGEOUS, and if you just want to find the best of the best for eye gloss, this is it. It has tiny shimmer particles suspended in it, but this only adds to the glossy look once on the eyes - it doesn't look glittery in the slightest. This feels a little tackier than the Milk option, but it just means it sticks around longer. It's not going to keep your eyes glued open, A Clockwork Orange-style, or anything.

Have you gotten any fun new beauty products lately? And let me know if you're an April baby, too!

The Shy Person's Guide to Rocking a Bold Lip

April 07, 2017 in Makeup, Tips

As someone who doesn't like being the center of attention at all, the prospect of wearing a bold lip out in public used to scare me. I would always put one on, decide it was "too much," and replace it with a more understated nude. Over the last few months I've been working my way up and building up my comfort levels around wearing bolder lip shades, and I've finally started feeling like it's no big deal. I figured I'd share the tips that really helped me for my fellow lipstick hoarders out there.

Start with deep nudes & neutrals

The first step I took in branching out to bolder looks was to wear deeper nudes/neutrals. Since they were still a natural brown/pink shade, they remained in what I felt was "wearable" territory, while still looking a bit more "done" than my previous nude staples. Try to pick something a few shades darker than your natural lip color. My lip color is more of a cool-toned rosy shade, so something like the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Do Me Baby is my perfect deeper nude shade.

Blot, Blot, Blot

Once I started heading towards brighter shades and away from neutrals, I found them much easier to wear and get used to when I blotted them down. Starting with a layer of lip balm really helps to sheer out the color, as well. Deeper berry shades like the NARS Lipstick in Scarlet Empress or Audacious Lipstick in Audrey work really well as they add a really natural-looking flush to the lips. Or if you know what color family you're going for, a sheer matte lipstick like the Glossier Generation G's would be perfect - Jam is a good way to ease into berry shades, Crush into bright pinks, and Zip into reds.

Wear it around the house

This was the biggest one for me - I just had to get used to seeing myself in the mirror in these bolder shades, so popping one on when I had nowhere to be really helped. I did this with deeper liquid lipstick shades. It also helped me get used to how these particular shades wore throughout the day, so once I started wearing them out, I knew when it would be time to touch up. We're our own toughest critic, so we often think we can't pull something off, when in reality, you're just not used to seeing a different look on yourself. I thought I couldn't pull off bright reds for the longest time until I started wearing the MAC Lipstick in Russian Red and the Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red around the house - once I got used to it, I realized I loved the look and bought myself the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl, which had been on my wishlist for years.

Keep the rest of your makeup minimal

My biggest problem with a bold lip was that I felt a little too "done." I prefer to keep my makeup on the natural side of things, so I found that adding in a bold lip made everything look too much on my face. So I brought down the amount of makeup I wore on the rest of my face to keep everything looking fresh. A dewy base with bright, minimal eye makeup and fluttery lashes looks perfect with any bold lip - I had a whole post dedicated to that specific look here.

Do you wear bold lip shades? What are your tips for easing into them?

Multi-Misting with Pixi Beauty

April 06, 2017 in Skincare

A couple weeks ago I got a super exciting PR package from Pixi Beauty containing most of their face mists. I'm all about face mists lately - being someone with quite dry, dehydrated skin, face mists are super nice pick-me-ups throughout the day. I had only tried two of the four mists sent (and only owned one), so I was chomping at the bit to hop in and try them all.

Hydrating Milky Mist | I already had and loved this one, and it's still my favorite of the bunch. It contains hyaluronic acid to plump up the skin as well as black oat, linoleic acid, and provitamin A to hydrate and soothe. It makes such a lovely base for makeup, and I find it's a pretty good alternative to the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist. It really hydrates my skin without feeling sticky or greasy and gives it a subtle luminosity.

Glow Mist | This is the other mist I had previously tried, although I did not have it in my collection until now. It's basically magical - it instantly makes the skin look so much brighter and glow-ier. It contains thirteen natural oils as well as propolis, aloe vera, and fruit extracts to protect and hydrate the skin. It also sets makeup. If you have dull skin, this is definitely the one for you. Again, it's not sticky or greasy and is perfect before and/or after makeup.

Makeup Fixing Mist | I'm drawn to this purely because of the color, but this is now my makeup setting spray of choice - I've been reaching for it over my MAC Fix+. It contains rosewater and green tea to both hydrate and balance the skin, ensuring your makeup doesn't get cakey or greasy. It's like misting a soft veil onto the skin - it helps powders melt into the skin and leaves you looking airbrushed. I've found it really does make my makeup last longer, too!

Vitamin Wakeup Mist | This mist was totally new to me - I had only just seen it in Target a few days before I received this package. I keep this at my bedside now to immediately spritz on when I wake up. As the name suggests, it's super energizing! The mist is made of an orange blossom water base enriched with citrus fruit extracts, lavender, and arginine to hydrate and strengthen. It has a light citrus scent that's a perfect pick-me-up for early mornings. It leaves my skin looking and feeling so much "peppier" if that makes sense. If you're looking for a refreshing mist to tone your skin in the morning, this is it.

Have you tried any of Pixi's face mists? I really want to try their new Sun Mist next!

All products mentioned have been sent to me for consideration, but all opinions are my own. Please see my disclaimer for more information.
