The Best Concealer for Every Coverage Level

November 16, 2017 in Makeup

As I stray further and further from higher coverage foundations, opting for sheer bases or no foundation at all, concealer is really becoming quite important to my makeup routine. I only have small problem areas on my face, so most of the time I like to leave the clear areas bare and use concealer only where I need it - it creates the illusion that I'm wearing no base makeup at all, which is always the look I'm going for. Depending on how I'm feeling and the look I'm going for, I'll need different levels of coverage. I'm super happy with my current collection of concealers and feel like I'm ready for any occasion.

LIGHT COVERAGE | Glossier Stretch Concealer: When my skin is feeling dry and dull, and I don't have too much to cover, the Glossier Stretch Concealer is always the one I turn to. I've heard it referred to as the "tinted moisturizer of concealers," and I definitely agree. It's got the sheerest coverage out of all my concealers, but it just helps to even everything out. It has a super dewy finish, so it adds life to tired undereyes, looks super skinlike, and moves with your face instead of cracking with too much expression.

MEDIUM COVERAGE | Milk Makeup Flex Concealer: The name makes me feel like they were going for a similar vibe to Glossier's, where it's supposed to move with your face and not crack or shift, and they've bumped up the coverage a bit from the Glossier. Out of all the concealer's I'm mentioning this is my most-used and probably my favorite. I like that it has the doe-foot applicator, so it's easy to dot on wherever. It blends equally well with fingers, a brush, or a beauty blender, and it just looks so natural on the skin. This one is excellent under the eyes and on redness, and I like that it doesn't cake up on blemishes too. It won't cover darker acne scars, but it does a good job of evening everything out.

MEDIUM-HIGH COVERAGE | NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer: For awhile, this was my ultimate favorite concealer - I loved it so much that I bought a second shade to mix for my perfect shade match. Despite having the word matte in the name, it has more of a satin finish that doesn't feel drying - in fact, it looks much less dry on my skin than the cult favorite Radiant Creamy Concealer. This gives great coverage and stays put well on blemishes, although I have to be careful to exfoliate beforehand. If I have a particularly angry spot, this won't cover up all the redness, but it does the job enough for me.

HIGH COVERAGE | Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Camouflage Concealer: This is a new addition, but I'm already hooked. This is a thick, highly pigmented concealer, but it blends out to not look like makeup at all. I love using a teeny bit of a high coverage concealer all over in place of foundation, and this is definitely a new favorite to do that with. Despite being high coverage, it doesn't get dry or cakey on the skin - in fact, it has a slightly more dewy finish. It works equally well under the eyes, on blemishes, and on redness, which is rare for such high coverage. This is going to be a staple all winter long.

HIGHEST COVERAGE | Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer: If nothing else will cover a blemish, I'll reach for this. It's my go-to for pinpoint concealing because you literally need the tiniest pinprick to get complete coverage. I also like that this doesn't have a super matte finish, so again, it doesn't cake up on blemishes. Sensing a theme here? This also works beautifully mixed into moisturizers for a custom lightweight base. When I first got it I was disappointed in the size, but this tiny pot is seriously going to last forever.

The Repurchases | Six Products Worthy of a Re-Buy

November 14, 2017 in Makeup, Skincare

I was looking through old blogposts earlier looking for ideas for this week when I found my "Products Worth Repurchasing" post from a few months ago. I remembered struggling to cut that post off at five products, so now I'm back with six more that I always want in my collection.

I only just bought my second bottle in the VIB sale, but the Drunk Elephant TLC Sukari Babyfacial is something I will forever repurchase. There is nothing that makes my skin look better. I use it once per week, and as time goes on I'm finding the results last longer and longer. It's quite an intense peel, containing 25% AHAs and 2% BHAs, but it doesn't irritate my skin and leaves it baby-soft, as the name promises. The way this makes my skin look makes it 100% worth the money for me, although I will probably try to hold off and only repurchase during Sephora or Dermstore sales.

Speaking of skincare I can't be without, I'm probably on my tenth bottle of the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser by now. I always need to have about three backups on hand, just in case. It's such a versatile product since it can remove makeup (light makeup, but that's what I wear most days anyway), and also works as a second/morning cleanse. My favorite way to use it is as a second cleanse at night to make sure every trace of makeup is washed away, and I love how it makes my skin feel. My skin definitely feels a little smoother and softer after using it, and I'm so happy that it doesn't make me feel stripped or tight at all.

In my last repurchases post, I mentioned two base products, and there's a third I wanted to mention. If forced to choose one favorite out of my whole collection, I think I'd have to say the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue is my favorite base product ever. It gives the perfect amount of sheer coverage and makes my skin look so glowy and healthy. My favorite thing about it is that despite being so glowy, it doesn't feel tacky on the skin or transfer. It lasts pretty well on me without my skin drinking it up, it doesn't cling to any dryness, and it's super easy to apply with my fingers. It's an all-around win for me.

Another restock I got in the VIB sale this month was the Milk Makeup Gel Brow. It's just my favorite brow pencil, and it pairs perfectly with the Glossier Boy Brow. It looks super natural, and the gel texture clings to brow hairs and makes them look a little fluffier. I go through these quite quickly, but that doesn't stop me from repurchasing when they run out. I always get the color Pilsner, which is the perfect ashy brown shade for me.

It took over a year, but I went through an entire tube of the Glossier Haloscope in Quartz. This is just a testament to how much I love it, because I rarely finish makeup products that aren't foundations, brow products, or mascaras. This is my most favorite highlighter because it's intense and natural all at once. It just looks like pure dewy skin and sticks around all day long. On more natural days I dab a little bit on with my fingers, but when I want it more full-on I stripe it on directly from the stick. It blends out beautifully and looks like your own beaming glossy skin.

It takes me forever to get through a tube of the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask, but I'm still on my fourth tube of it. This is pretty much the only lip product I use at night, and it keeps my lips from completely drying out. It has a super thick consistency, which I like because it means it sticks around all night. It feels so nourishing and heals any dryness overnight. I'm quite sensitive to a number of lip balms, so when I find something that doesn't leave my lips in a cracked, bleeding mess, I stick with it. The tubes are really neverending though - I bought a backup in April because I thought I was about to run out, and I still haven't had to open it yet.

What are your must-repurchase products?

A Sephora VIB Sale Haul & Wishlist

November 10, 2017 in Makeup, Skincare

I'm trying to be better with my spending this year, but I couldn't just not take advantage of the Sephora VIB sale - I kept it pretty tame compared to the past couple years, but I thought it deserved its own post nonetheless.

I just had to take the opportunity to try one of the Pat McGrath Labs LuxeTrance Lipsticks - $38 was too hard to justify (says the woman with 2 full-sized Tom Ford lipsticks), but the sale made it more tolerable. I'm so glad I finally tried this, because the formula is just glorious. It almost feels like nothing on the lips because it's so lightweight, and yet it's so incredibly pigmented. It lasts well without fading weirdly despite being the creamier of her two lipstick formulas. I got the shade Realness, a mauve nude, and it's quite similar to my natural lip color. It really adds a nice defined look to my lips.

T-B | Pat McGrath Realness, Hourglass Confession Set: True Love Means, You Are My, My One Desire, NARS Rock With You

I'll continue with the lip product section of the haul, because I admittedly got too many. I decided to grab another NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment (taking my own advice from my Sephora Recommendations post yesterday), and this time I got the shade Rock With You. It's described as a deep mulberry, which is pretty spot on. It's a great deep berry shade that doesn't have too much purple in it. It's going to be perfect for fall. It also looks stunning sheered out to almost nothing - it gives a grape-popsicle-esque stain.

I also decided to get the Hourglass Confession Lipstick Set - I've been wanting to try the Confession Lipsticks since they came out, and since I loved the look of swatches I had seen of all three shades in the set, I thought it would be worth the money. These have the loveliest formula and are so creamy and comfortable on the lips, with a beautiful satin finish. The three shades included are True Love Means, a peachy nude, You Are My, a rosy brown, and My One Desire, a cool rose nude. True Love Means may be a little too peachy for me, but I haven't tried it on my lips yet so we'll see. I'm already in love with the other two shades are would definitely recommend the set. The set also includes one of the holders that you can switch the shades in and out of. The holder is super weighty and luxe, and I'm going to feel so fancy whipping this out to reapply.

I tried to rein myself in with skincare because I already have so much to get through, but I just couldn't resist the Belif Moisturizing Eye Bomb. I was recently sent a few Belif products and have been loving them, and that on top of hearing nothing but good things about this new eye cream had my mind made up. I used it last night and this morning, and I already am seeing what the fuss is about. At this point of my life I'm not going for radical anti-wrinkle creams or anything, I'm just looking for something to keep the area moisturized, and this does just that. I swear it's instantly plumping and fills out fine lines - it kept my usual concealer creases at bay today! It's a similar consistency to their Moisturizing Bomb, so while it's not as light as the Aqua Bomb, it's not heavy at all. I can definitely see this becoming my go-to, especially for mornings.

The last thing I got was a repurchase of the Milk Makeup Gel Brow - I'm down to a little nub of mine and I just love it. It pairs perfectly with the Glossier Boy Brow to give bushy yet feathery lashes. It is pretty soft, so I go through it quickly and have to sharpen it often, but I love the result so much that I don't care. If you're looking for a new brow pencil, I'd definitely check this one out.

I'm going to try and hold off on getting anything in the sale this weekend (although I'm going to Sephora with my mom and sister tomorrow) but there still are a few things sitting in my cart. I've got the Drunk Elephant Babyfacial in there because I think I'm about to run out of mine and can't even imagine being without it. I'm also thinking of restocking on the Ouai Hair Oil and Origins Drink-Up Intensive Mask - I'm just about at the end of both of these, and while I have alternatives I could use, I do love them both. And not that I even need more lip products, but I've got my eye on the Nudestix Magnetic Matte Lip Color in Rose and the Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored High-Shine Lacquer Lipgloss in Pretty Thing. They look like great everyday colors, and I love the Nudestix formula and have heard nothing but good thing about those glosses. The one new thing that looks quite intriguing (although again, I don't need more skincare) is the Laneige Mini Pore Waterclay Mask. I've been loving their Water Sleeping Mask and Lip Mask, and I'm really noticing a lack of clay masks in my collection. So maybe that one is justifiable?

Did you get/will you be getting anything in the Sephora Sale?
