Drugstore Favorites

January 03, 2015

The beginning of the year, for me, is when I really need to budget and save my money (buying Christmas gifts hits my bank account hard every year). If you're in the same boat, I thought it would be helpful to go through some of my favorite affordable drugstore products I've found.

I've found the drugstore to have a few great primers - in fact, the more expensive ones I've tried have been the ones that break me out. I love the L'Oreal Magic Lumi Light-Infusing Primer. It's perfect for injecting some life back into dull skin while also ensuring that your makeup will stay around all day.

My favorite drugstore foundation I've tried is the Revlon Nearly Naked foundation. It offers about the same amount of coverage as a tinted moisturizer, but it just helps to even everything out. It doesn't cover all redness and blemishes, but I save concealer for that. It gives a perfect veil of coverage that still looks like your own skin. If you're looking for more coverage, L'Oreal True Match is great as well.

Both of my most-reached for drugstore concealers come from Maybelline. I can't sing enough praise for the Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser. The sponge on the end kind of grosses me out, but the product itself is amazing. It goes on so smoothly and blends out beautifully and quickly with just a finger. I currently use the shade Fair, but I'd love to try the Brightener shade as well.  The concealer I'd use everywhere else (redness, blemishes, etc) is the Fit Me Concealer. It's so creamy and blendable, and the shade 15 Fair matches my skin perfectly. Be sure to set it with powder, though, because the creaminess does cost you a little longevity.

For eyeshadow, the best I've found are the Maybelline 24-Hour Color Tattoos. These cream shadows are so easy to just slap on and blend out with a finger that they're perfect for doing your makeup in a rush or for minimal makeup days. Since they'll stay put all day, they make great bases for other eyeshadows. My favorite shades are Barely Branded, Bad to the Bronze, and Pomegranate Punk.

If you're looking for a pencil liner, look no further than the Rimmel ScandalEyes line. I've found that they're dupes for the Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliners. They go on so smoothly and creamily, but won't budge once they set.

My two favorite mascaras (including high-end) have been from L'Oreal. The Telescopic Shocking Extensions Waterproof Mascara is absolutely perfect for lengthening and holding a curl right up until you wash it off at night. And the Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara is a great all-rounder - it adds length, volume, and curl, creating a perfect amount of drama. It can tend to clump if you put too many coats on, but for me this is a one-coat wonder.

As for lips, you can't go wrong with either the Nyx Butter Glosses or the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipsticks. Both feel so comfortable on the lips. The Butter Glosses have great pigmentation for a gloss, and they smell incredible. The Revlon lipsticks come in loads of colors that are pigmented in one swipe. My favorites are Pink in the Afternoon (that perfect "Breakfast at Tiffany's" shade) and Cherries in the Snow (a classic pink-toned red).

As for tools, my favorite drugstore brushes are all from Real Techniques. They're such great quality - I reach for these more than some more expensive brushes I have. I've washed mine a lot and have experienced no shedding at all. My favorites are the Buffing Brush, the Contour Brush (both sold together in the Core Collection set), and the Blush Brush. I've tried just about all of them, though, and they're all amazing.

If you're still here, thanks for sticking with me till the end, and I hope this was helpful!

2015 Goals

January 01, 2015

Happy New Year! The beginning of the year is always a favorite time of year for me. Although I'm sad that Christmas is over, it just feels so refreshing to be in a new year. I always make resolutions in my head but am rarely able to stick to them, so I thought if I wrote them down and released it for all to see on the Internet I'd be more likely to keep with them.

Budget my money.

I'm currently trying to save for my own place, but I'm also in the midst of paying off student loans. This past year I've done a lot of spending (specifically at Sephora - hey, it's all material for the blog, right?) so in the new year I'd like to take some time each week to budget out my money. I'll determine how much I'll make from work, then split it up into money to save for my student loans, money for my car payment and gas, and money to put into my savings account to save for my own place. I want to still allow myself some spending money each week (I've found that putting myself on spending bans hurts more than it helps!), but I know having a set amount I'm allowed to spend will help with my overspending habit. I might even get really fancy and keep this in a spreadsheet. I love making spreadsheets. If I only stick to one of these resolutions, I'm determined for it to be this one.

Find some form of exercise I like.

I used to do ballet, and I did it for most of my life, but the classes just don't fit into my schedule anymore. This past year I've tried running and just couldn't stick to it, but I know I need to do something to exercise. I took yoga classes in college and loved it, and I tried keeping up with it on my own, but I eventually fell out of the habit. I've recently found the Yoga with Adriene YouTube channel from Vivianna Does Makeup, so I'm thinking I will start doing yoga again. I liked doing it on my own because I could just do it whenever I had some free time, so with the videos I'll be able to do it at home but still get a class-like experience.

Eat healthier.

This is on my list every year, and while I start strong at the beginning of the year (and often have a resurgence in the summer), I fizzle out by December (or let's be real, September). I'll always have too much of a love for chocolate and burritos and mac & cheese to eat completely healthily all of the time, but this year I'm really going to try to make healthier choices. I'm really going to have to try to find healthy lunch ideas I can bring to work, because this is where I suffer the most - those microwave mac & cheese bowls are just so convenient! Please leave your favorite healthy lunch recipes in the comments!

Take vitamins.

During my health kick this summer, I bought some vitamins to start taking every day. I was taking a multivitamin and also fish oil every day, but I've since forgotten about it and the bottles have been sitting in the cabinet ever since. This year I've been sick more than I think I ever have, so I really want to get back into taking my vitamins, eating healthy, and exercising to try and strengthen my immune system.

Keep up a hobby.

Right now, blogging is my only hobby. I actually started this blog because I didn't have any hobbies and really needed one, and I have since fallen in love. But I'd like to do something to get away from the computer every once in awhile. Every time I try to get into a new hobby, I don't really stick to it for long (except for blogging!). I tried sewing after I begged my boyfriend for a sewing machine for my birthday or an anniversary, but it was too hard and I have since let it fall by the wayside (much to his discontent, sorry Brett!). I want to get back into sewing, but I'll have to get some help from someone because it's proven harder than I thought to teach myself. I also would love to take up painting. I took an art class in my last semester of college, and it was one of my favorite classes I've ever taken. We studied different forms of painting, like fresco, egg tempera, and oil, and I'd really like to keep going with that. I'll have to find a class that's local.

Watch this blog grow and improve it!

I'm already amazed with how much my blog has grown since it started in September, but I'm excited to see it grow even more! Starting this blog is one of the best decisions I've ever made. It makes me so happy to sit and write about something I'm passionate about, and it makes me even happier that there are people who enjoy reading it and who always leave lovely comments for me. This year I'd love to start posting more frequently than the 3 posts per week I'm currently doing. I'm always looking for ways to improve, from the design to the photography to the writing. This year I'll really work on making it the best it can be!

Did you make any New Year's Resolutions? What are yours?

14 Favorites of 2014

December 30, 2014

How is it that 2014 is already nearly over? This has been a hugely eventful year for me - I graduated from Smith College after 4 long years with a degree in chemistry, I got my first real-world job (that started the day after my graduation), and I started this blog! 2014 was the year I really got into makeup and beauty in general, so I thought I'd go quickly through my top 14 favorites of 2014.

1. Pixi Glow Tonic. I've raved about this many, many times but it really changed my skin for the better, helping with hyperpigmentation, redness, and acne. I will forever repurchase.

2. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream. Another often-mentioned favorite. Again, this really changed my skin and helped with my dehydration problem. My skin is always glowing and soothed thanks to this.

3. Caudalie SOS Thirst-Quenching Serum. I've unfortunately run out of this and only have a sample size left, but it's still a staple in my routine. It not only ensures my skin stays moisturized but helps calm any sensitive episodes my skin may have.

4. Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask. Another raved-about favorite. This gives me a supermodel-esque glow in one night.

5. Lorac Pro Palette. One of my most-used palettes this year, even though I've only had it since July. I love every single color and can create pretty much any look I want.

6. Diorskin Nude Skin-Glowing Foundation. One of my best discoveries of the year. Perfect for light to medium coverage that still looks remarkably like skin - your skin if it was perfect.

7. Anastasia Brow Wiz. The one that really helped me reach the top of my brow game. I'll always have one in my makeup bag.

8. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser Concealer. The one I've gone back to time and again. It covers my dark circles up perfectly, is extremely blendable, yet doesn't crease throughout the day. Perfect.

9. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. A newer discovery, but it's now my absolute favorite concealer for covering redness and blemishes. I'd love it for undereye circles too if the aforementioned Maybelline wasn't so good.

10, 11, 12. MAC Lipsticks in Patisserie, Syrup, & Creme in Your Coffee. This was the year of the MAC lipsticks for me. I reached for these three neutral shades the most.

13. MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl. This year was also the year of the lipliner for me. This was the first one I fell in love with and will continue to be a great one.

14. MAC 217 Brush. I put off getting this brush despite hearing rave after rave, but I fully understood the hype once I started using it. This improved my eyeshadow game to a whole other level - it really does do the work for you.

What were your most-loved products this year?
