Forgotten Favorites

January 10, 2015

As part of trying to save money that I usually spend on makeup, I've gone through and sorted my collection looking for old favorites to reinstate into my routine - "shopping my stash," if you will. I actually had to stop myself from shouting, "Oh, I forgot about this!" a few times - probably a sign that I don't need any more makeup for awhile.

I've been so preoccupied with new foundation additions, mostly the Nars Sheer Glow that I got for Christmas and the Diorskin Nude foundation I bought in October, that I forgot about how much I loved using the Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Airbrush Foundation. Since my skin is on the dry and dull side I was wary of this at first but it's actually a very "creamy" powder, if that makes sense. It never looks chalky on the skin, and it gets better as the day goes on. It's perfect for minimal makeup days, and it also works really well as a setting powder for me.

When emptying out my little box of eye products, I found that I've somehow amassed seven of the Maybelline Color Tattoos. I don't know how it happened, but I usually only rotate between two or three of them. I remembered my love for Tough as Taupe, a matte elephant gray color that's really flattering on my cool skintone. I'll definitely be breaking this out more from now on, and I think it will look especially nice as a base for my Naked2 Basics Palette.

Another eye product I forgot about is my Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Earth Angel. I remember wearing this almost every day for a few weeks when I got it in the spring. It's got a beautiful taupe shade that I like using all over the lid, and a lovely almost olive green color that's like nothing I had ever worn before but still super wearable. I like using it in the crease. I'm glad I've found it again - I think it'll look really nice paired with one of the brown-toned nude lip products that I love so much.

There are three cheek products that I found have been neglected. I was so excited about The Body Shop Honey Bronzer when I first got it, but since summer ended I've stopped wearing it. It's such a beautiful shade though, not too orange or too muddy, and it comes in more than one "universal" shade - I got the palest one and it's only slightly darker than my skintone, so it's very easy to wear. The other cheek product is theBalm's Frat Boy blush. This is unbelievably pigmented - you really only need to tap a brush in it to get a perfect pinched wash of peachy pink on your cheeks that'll stay put all day. Another blush I've forgotten about is the Clinique Cheek Pop in Berry Pop. I had this on my wishlist for so long, so I feel bad that I've already stopped using it regularly. It brings such a beautiful berry shade to the complexion, and the formula is intriguing - it's unclear if it's a powder or a cream. It applies beautifully and was a favorite for a few weeks, so I'll need to make sure I leave this one at the top of my blush pile to use more frequently.

My lip product collection is so large that I'm sure there are more than just two forgotten favorites there, but the two that I thought of first are the Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Sultry and the YSL Volupte Sheer Candy in Succulent Pomegranate (4). The Matte Balms are such a beautiful formula - comfortable and moisturizing while still being matte. I'm assuming I forgot about this color because it's really similar to a lot of the other "neutral" lip products I've collected this fall. The YSL lipstick is a bright pink color that I thought was more appropriate for spring and summer, but it's actually very brightening on my skintone and could also be worn in the colder months.

I'm really excited to have rediscovered these products - it almost feels as if I've bought some new things! Have you ever "shopped your stash?"

"No Makeup" Makeup

January 08, 2015

Most days, if I don't really have any plans I have no qualms about having a no makeup day. But every once in awhile I still do like to put some effort in to look a little more polished and put together.

I'll first dab a little bit of a multitasking concealer, like the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, under my eyes and on any blemishes and redness. I like to fill in my brows no matter what, and the Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade gives the most natural result for me. I'll usually skip the eyeshadow and eyeliner and go straight to mascara (after curling my lashes, of course) - I love the Clinique Lash Power Feathering Mascara because it gives definition, length, and separation without being too dramatic. And it's easy to wash off at the end of the day, score. If you do want eyeshadow, though, my favorite for this look is a soft champagne shade, such as the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Barely Branded or Benefit's Creaseless Cream Shadow in RSVP. Most times my cheeks are looking rosy enough to not need blush, but if I were to wear one I would choose a natural option, such as the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Exposed or the Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush in Cherub. The latter looks exceptionally natural, pretty, and skin-like. I always have to have something on my lips, even just a lip balm, but a product that's been perfect for this look has been the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfectors. Since they're so sheer, any of the shades would look lovely, but I like the shade 01 Rose Shimmer. Don't be put off by the name, there's actually no visible shimmer. These look like a gloss but feel like a balm on the lips and smell so good. They're definitely going to become a well-worn favorite!

So there you go - an easy, quick look using only 5 or 6 products!

What products do you reach for for a minimal makeup look?

By the way my hair is wet in the above photo, not extremely greasy I swear!

NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien: The Most Perfect Everyday Lip

January 06, 2015

Sometimes I look at my collection of natural/neutral/my-lips-but-better lip products and tell myself, "Kelsey, this is excessive." But I can justify every single product. Lately though, I've only been reaching for one over and over, and it's the Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien.

It's a new addition to my collection (bought with Christmas money), but it almost hasn't left my lips since I got it. It's the most perfect shade for me - a dusky, mauve-y pink that's very similar yet a little deeper than my natural lip shade. This probably sounds like my many other natural-colored lip products I rave on and on about, but there's just something about this pencil that's been keeping me exclusively loyal to it. It could be that the pencil lends itself to a more defined application. Since my love affair with lip liners began, I had been using my usual MAC Syrup and Patisserie with a layer of Whirl or Soar underneath, but the Nars offering is a standalone product - you can easily line and fill in your lip shape. And don't even get me started on the beautiful formula of these pencils. I have another shade, Hyde Park, and I wore it to death this fall. They're comfortable on the lips because they're not fully matte, and yet they last so much longer than a creamy lipstick. I've been reaching for this over and over because I know it won't need reapplication until after lunch.

Have you tried any of the Nars Satin Lip Pencils? Are there any other colors I should put on my list? I've absolutely fallen in love with the formula!
