Makeup for Allergy Season

April 30, 2015 in Makeup

One drawback to the weather warming up is pollen literally everywhere. It seems that everywhere you look now, despite the temperatures still having a hard time creeping above 60 degrees here in Massachusetts, is a thin yellow film that’s just awful. In recent years I’ve developed terrible seasonal allergies out of nowhere, and after having my makeup streaming down my face more than a few times thanks to watery eyes, I’ve put together a few tips and product recommendations for you allergy-sufferers out there as well.

The most important thing is finding a good smudgeproof eyeliner and mascara. I always tightline my upper lashline and have always had small issues with smudging. But recently thanks to the Sephora birthday gift, I’ve gotten my hands on the NARS Larger than Life Long-wear Eyeliner. I’ve been using it every day and even when my eyes get super watery and itchy, the liner just stays put. It doesn’t even transfer to my lower waterline! I’ve got a sample size of the shade Via Veneto, a basic black, and I’d love to get my hands on a brown as well. I like to use it lightly smudged into my upper lash line as well, and it never leaves any unsightly smudges on my eyelid.  If you’re into liquid liner, the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner is perfect as well and never budges on me.

I always tend to use waterproof mascaras anyway because I like the way they hold a curl better, but let me tell you, not all waterproof formulas are created equal. Some still smudge terribly on me, even on a fairly un-watery eye day. The ones that never let me down, though, are both from L’Oreal. I’ve been converted into a full-time worshipper of the Miss Manga Waterproof Mascara, but before that I was a huge fan of the Shocking Extensions Telescopic Waterproof Mascara. They’re both beautiful, affordable mascaras that will stay exactly where you put them.

I normally don’t have too much of an issue with eyeshadow smudging when my eyes water, but I always think it’s better to be safe than sorry, and sometimes I’ll rub my eyes without thinking and be glad I took precautions to make it smudgeproof. All you need really is a good eyeshadow primer, and my current favorite is the Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer - I’ve got both the original and the Champagne version on rotation. A good long-wearing shadow is essential too - my favorites are the By Terry Ombre Blackstar, the Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palettes (pictured is the Dolce Vita), and the Maybelline Color Tattoos. Also, I always leave my lower lashline and waterline bare during allergy season to further prevent any smudging.

Lastly, I also tend to get some creasing and fading of my undereye concealer during allergy season so to combat that, I always take whatever eyeshadow primer is leftover on my finger after using it on my eyelids and gently take it underneath my eyes (of course this is best with primers that don’t have any color to them). On top I’ll apply a reliable concealer, like the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser  or the Estee Lauder Double Wear Brush-On Glow BB Highlighter.

Do you get seasonal allergies too? What are your top smudgeproof products for watery eyes?

April Favorites

April 28, 2015 in Makeup

I can’t believe April is just about over - it seems like my birthday was just the other day! I’ve got quite a few favorites this month, most of which were birthday presents either from others or sneaky little gifts to myself.

I’ll start with my absolute favorite base at the moment - the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream. I’ve mentioned this briefly in a few posts this month, but I’ve been wearing it pretty much every day. It gives the perfect amount of coverage for me (keeping my fingers crossed for another great skin month in May, too), and it’s the first tinted moisturizer I’ve tried that actually still feels moisturizing. You can really feel it sinking in and nourishing the skin, so much so that once it has sunk in, you really don’t feel anything on the skin. I love this because I usually can’t handle the feeling of something like a heavier foundation on my face for too long. Despite it drying down and setting, it still leaves the most beautiful glow and leaves me looking totally healthy and radiant.

On my cheeks I’ve been loving the Stila Convertible Color in Lilium. I finally got my hands on this on my little birthday spree (thank you, Brett!), and I finally understand the hype. It feels so creamy and fresh on the skin yet still lasts all day on me. I haven’t tried it on my lips yet, but judging how it performs on my cheeks I don’t think it would dry them out or anything. It leaves a dewy glow (without having any shimmer) that’s perfect for spring. The color Lilium is the perfect neutral pink, so it goes with absolutely any look. I really want to get my hands on a few more colors, especially the neutral Peony and vibrant Poppy.

Another creamy cheek product that I treated myself to as a birthday present is the Kevyn Aucoin The Creamy Glow in Duo 4 - the contour & highlight one. It has cream versions of his Sculpting and Celestial powders, and after using it I think I may have to pick up the powder versions once summer is over. The contour color is absolutely perfect and looks very shadow-like even on my pale, cool-toned skin. The highlight is really beautiful as well and gives the most natural glow - I’d say it’s a more golden version of the RMS Beauty Living Luminizer. Despite coming in the tiniest packaging, you only need a small amount, so I can see this lasting ages - after using this every day all month I haven’t even made a dent in either shade.

Something I’ve had on my lips nonstop this month is the MAC lipstick in Brave. It’s the perfect neutral/MLBB color for me, so it really enhances my lips and draws some attention without being too bold or in-your-face. I absolutely love pairing it with the Soar lip pencil.

Another pick from MAC is the Eyeshadow in All That Glitters. I got this from my sister for my birthday along with Patina, but I fell so in love with All That Glitters that I haven’t gotten the chance to use Patina yet. I mentioned this in my Top 3 Single Eyeshadows post despite only having it for a couple weeks when the post was published. It’s quickly become my go-to color for a quick wash all over the lid - it’s the perfect brightening, shimmery peachy-pink that looks great with lashings upon lashings of mascara.

Last on the makeup front is a new favorite brush - the Real Techniques Bold Metals 200 Oval Shadow Brush. This has gotten a bit of hype recently, and it’s all true. It’s quite a large brush, and honestly at first I thought it was too big to be practical, but it just means you can sweep on your eyeshadow in mere seconds. The brush has a fluffy quality as well like the MAC 217 that makes it great for blending. A one-stop brush for shading and blending? I’m sold.

My next favorites are all jewelry bits that I got for my birthday. My boyfriend got me this beautiful circle ring from a shop on Etsy, and it’s become a ring that I pretty much never take off except to shower and sleep. I love that the circle is silver and the band is gold. I got a pair of the rose gold arc earrings I mentioned both in my Birthday Wishlist and April Pinspiration posts from my parents, and I’ve pretty much worn them all month. They’re perfect for my minimalistic style, yet still make a bit of a statement as they’re like nothing I’ve ever seen before. They’re so easy to pop in as I’m rushing out the door and go with everything. Lastly is my new beloved Daniel Wellington watch. I got the Classy Bristol watch with the rose gold hardware (of course). I have a chunkier rose gold watch from Michael Kors, so this makes a perfect more minimal alternative. I’ve been wearing it nonstop because it’s so dainty and complements any outfit (see a theme here?).

What were your favorites this month?

New In: Skincare on Trial

April 23, 2015 in Skincare

I tend to go through phases with my spending - for a while I’ll buy nothing but makeup, nothing but clothes (very rare), or nothing but skincare. After my little makeup spree for my birthday, there haven’t been many products I’ve felt like I needed to add to my wishlist, so it was naturally time to switch over to a skincare phase.

I’ve found that a consistent routine has been the best thing for my skin. I’ve been introducing these new things carefully and one at a time, so if I do have a reaction to something, I’ll know the cause.

My makeup remover/first cleanse of choice (the Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter) is just about to run out, so instead of buying my fourth tub I decided to try something new. I stopped by the little travel-size aisle in Sephora (the aisle of doom basically) and picked up the Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil. But then right next to it was the Ole Henriksen Pure Truth Melting Cleanser, so I had to try that too (see? I told you it was the aisle of doom). I’ve really been loving using these together - the Boscia oil first to get the bulk of my makeup off and then the Ole Henriksen cleanser as my second cleanse. The Bosica oil smells really herbal and refreshing and does a great job of removing most of my makeup - I do have a little trouble removing waterproof mascara but the second cleanse takes care of it. The Ole Henriksen cleanser is a strange consistency but feels beautiful and balmy on the skin. It leaves my skin feeling really clean but not tight or stripped at all.

I also recently got a sample of the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser as a Sephora point-perk. You might remember I brought a sachet of this with me on my trip to DC (travel beauty post here), and I really liked it for the one use I got out of it. Since my current morning cleanser is running out, I’m excited to give this a try.

A really interesting product that I got in a Birchbox is the Aqua Reveal Satin Bright Soft Water Peel for Face. I’ve used it a couple times and it’s the weirdest (in a good way) product I’ve ever used - it’s a clear gel that you massage over your skin, and as you’re massaging you get all this balled up dead skin coming off. So far it’s been a really lovely and gentle exfoliator that may be really good if you’re sensitive to manual or chemical exfoliants.

In the Sephora VIB Sale, I picked up a set from First Aid Beauty

containing the Face Cleanser and Ultra Repair Cream (both of which I love), and the Skin Rescue Purifying Face Mask and Ultra Repair Liquid Recovery, which I’ve never tried. I’ve started using the Liquid Recovery and am intrigued - I’m not sure I’ve seen any results from it yet, but it feels really soothing so I’m going to continue using it. I haven’t had a chance to try the mask yet, but it will be cracked open during my next pamper session.

Something I’m definitely interested in buying the full size of is the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Vitamin C Collagen Booster. I’ve been using this sample for about a month, and it’s really helped brighten and smooth my skin and fade acne scars.

Lastly, I’ve got an eye cream and a moisturizer. I got the Supergoop! Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Cream SPF 37 in my April Birchbox (what are you trying to say, Birchbox?), and it really intrigued me because of its added SPF. I always make sure I’ve got SPF on because my skin is so fair, so having something to make sure the delicate eye area is covered is great. It’s pretty moisturizing but has that telltale sunscreen scent. I’m not sure if I’d buy the full size, but I’ll definitely use up the sample.  And lastly, I got the Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief as another Sephora point-perk. I remember having a tiny sample of this last summer and thought that it felt lovely and cooling on my skin, so I’m excited to use it again.

After taking this picture I went even more skincare-crazy and had my sister pick up the Lush Full of Grace Serum Bar for me (she lives much closer to a store than I do and has been raving about this since she got it for herself) and also ordered some Asian skincare bits from Peach and Lily - somebody please stop me.

Let me know if you’d like to see a more in-depth review of any of these products as I use them more in the coming months.  Have you tried any new skincare products lately?
