Smile Brilliant Whitening System* Review

September 03, 2015 in Lifestyle

As a beauty blogger, I feel like I should be posting more pictures of myself with the makeup I’m always blathering on about actually on my face. But one of the reasons I don’t do it too often (besides the fact that I’m not skilled in the realm of selfie-taking) is that I always want to smile with my teeth showing, but I was always pretty insecure about them. I had never done any whitening systems or strips before, so I was left with a lovely slight yellow tinge that I didn’t really know how to get rid of. So imagine my excitement when I was contacted by Smile Brilliant to see if I was interested in testing out their whitening system*.

The idea behind this system is that it’s the same thing you’d get if you went to a dentist, but you’re able to do it in the comfort of your own home for a much lower price. You are first sent a kit to make molds of your teeth for them to make custom-fitted trays. This includes three sets of base and catalyst putty components and two trays. You simply mix the two kinds of putty together, place it in the tray, and make a mold of your teeth (they provide really easy to follow directions for this). You then mail your molds back in the provided, prepaid envelope, and a few days later you get your custom-fitted trays! So then you can apply a thin line of the whitening gel into your trays as often or as little as you’d like. I’d highly recommend also picking up the Desensitizing gel as well, which you apply after the whitening gel.

I’ll be honest, it took me forever to get around to making the molds of my teeth to send in to get my trays. I was worried about messing them up, and there was only one extra set of putty components if I did - what if I messed up both trays? But when I actually sat down to do it, it only took me about 10 minutes total and was super easy. If you’re embarrassed easily, do this on your own. I had literal buckets of drool just coming out of my mouth (sorry guys) when waiting for the molds to harden in there - buckets. Within a few days I had my custom trays and was ready to start whitening!

Smile Brilliant says you can keep the trays with whitening gel in anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 hours. I got into the routine of doing mine for about an hour on every weeknight before bed and gave myself a break on the weekends. I would then load the trays with some of the desensitizing gel and keep that in for around 10 minutes. I never experienced any sensitivity whatsoever, although if I didn’t properly wipe away any excess whitening gel that rose up out of the trays when I put them in, I would get a small amount of gum irritation - nothing too bad, and nothing that lasted for more than an hour though.

Apologies for the slightly different lighting - it must have been a cloudier day when I took the before picture! But both pictures were taken around the same time of day in the same place.

After a month of continuous use, my teeth really did get whiter. The aim of whitening treatments like these is to remove stains and get your teeth back to their natural state, rather than totally bleach your teeth to a pure white (which would be awful for your teeth as you could imagine). So while my smile is not dazzling and won't be blinding anyone anytime soon, I wasn’t expecting that and didn't want that. As I’m always trying to go for a natural look in my makeup and appearance, I really prefer this “enhanced” version of my smile, “your teeth but better” if you will, rather than a Ross from Friends look.

Overall I’m super pleased with the system and will continue using it every so often to top up and keep my smile bright. Have you ever tried whitening your teeth before?

Beauty by Kelsey Turns 1: Sharing the Love

September 02, 2015 in Lifestyle

Hey everyone, I wanted to include a bonus post this week because a year ago today this little blog was born! I had spent all last summer going back and forth on whether or not to start one, and I finally took the plunge. It just seemed like a fun little hobby, but I had no idea I’d fall so in love with it. In a year I’ve gained a few friends I can chat to and freak out about beauty with without annoying my friends and family, I’ve developed my writing and photography skills, I’ve learned a little bit about coding, and become absolutely addicted to reading other blogs. When I first started blogging, I only read two or three, but now my “following” count is off the charts and my Bloglovin feed is constantly full to the brim with new posts to read. I thought to celebrate 1 year of Beauty by Kelsey, I’d go through a few of my favorite blog discoveries of the year.

JASMINEHARDINGMAKEUP | I just had to start with Jasmine because she’s the first friend I made through blogging. I’m pretty sure I started reading her blog within days of her first post going up and I’ve been a loyal reader ever since. Her blog is one I’m constantly checking for updates - it’s completely flawless, from her beautiful photography to her captivating writing style. She has fabulous taste in products and is definitely one to go to for recommendations if you love a good glow.

MAKEUP-SESSIONS | I first found Beti’s blog through her gorgeous Instagram account. Her photos are so lovely and you can tell they're hers the minute you see them. Her reviews are incredibly informative, and she makes me want to buy everything she writes about. We’ve discovered we’ve got very similar tastes in products, so her blog is always one I turn to when I’m feeling a little spendy.

TAMIRA JARREL | Tamira’s blog is another one I found through Instagram. If you want to see an example of impeccable branding, look no further. Her photos are phenomenal and always follow a minimalist monochrome palette. She always pulls together the best products for the most lovely and natural looks. I blame her for my recent obsession with taupe-y brown nude shades for the lips. You should also check out her YouTube channel as well - it’s one of my favorite channels I’m subscribed to.

GH0STPARTIES | I found Kate’s blog soon after I started blogging, and everything is just goals. She is my biggest inspiration photography-wise, her photos are just flawless. She has a talent for making me want to buy whatever she writes about - I’ve added the Oskia Renaissance Mask and lots of things from Bobbi Brown to my ever-growing wishlist because of her. I love that she writes about a variety of topics - I come for the beauty posts of course, but her interiors posts always make me swoon and wish I had my own place to decorate.

THAT’S JUST FABULOUS | Faith is a blogger I’ve been following only for the past couple months, and seriously I don’t know where I’ve been. She puts together the most beautiful and aesthetically-pleasing flatlays (can you tell it’s the photography that attracts me to a blog?), and I love when she makes really cute gifs of the products being laid out or opening and closing; it’s such a unique touch that I’ve never seen on another blog. If you’re not following her blog, do it now!

Thank you to all my readers for sticking with me through my first year. I can’t wait to see what year 2 brings!

August Favorites

September 01, 2015 in Makeup, Skincare

Fun fact: the very first post on my blog was my August Favorites from last year. Yes, Beauty by Kelsey turns 1 year old tomorrow! (Keep an eye out for a special bonus post tomorrow.) This month I had to really narrow down the favorites so this post wouldn't end up becoming my first novel. There were so many new beauty discoveries for me this month, so you know what's included here really is the best of the best.

Starting with my favorite base product of the month, it should come as no surprise that I'm including the It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream. I've written about it in my most recent Makeup Lately post, and also in my Your Skin But Better post, so I'll keep the formal reviewing brief. I'll just say that this stuff is magical. It packs a good whack of coverage but looks and feels like you've got nothing on your face. Being a constant suffer-er of dry/dehydrated skin, this is nourishing enough to not go cakey or dry on me, but since it sets down to a satin finish I'd imagine it would still be quite suitable for someone with oilier skin than me.

I've found another mascara love this month, and I featured it in my "True Life: I Only Wear Drugstore Mascaras" post. The Maybelline Full 'N Soft Waterproof Mascara is just a great basic all-rounder. It really naturally beefs up the lashes, giving you a really nice, fluffy/fluttery look that I've been enjoying on an everyday basis. I haven't worn any other mascaras since I got this one early in the month, when I'm typically rotating through my collection almost every day.

As you know, I'm totally obsessed with highlighters. It's one of the only areas of my makeup collection that I just can't resist adding to. This month my most worn has been the Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Champagne Pop. It gives the most brilliant glow to the skin that makes you look so dewy and healthy. The formula is buttery soft and oh-so-pigmented - it's enough to get me lusting after the other shades in the line.

The lipstick I've been reaching for most often this month has been the Marc Jacobs New Nudes Sheer Lip Gel in Role Play. This goes perfectly with the lipliner in Prim(rose) that I mentioned in my July Favorites for a dusty pink nude lip. It's not as sheer as the name makes it sound - in fact, it is quite pigmented and opaque. It leaves a lovely sheen on the lips and feels so comfortable. The packaging is absolutely gorgeous as well - I like that the case is a nude shade rather than the black of the normal line, and it has a really satisfying magnetic closure.

Another lip favorite this month has been the Glossier Coconut Balm Dotcom. I was obsessed with the original balm, so when I heard they came out with a coconut-scented version I was all over it. It smells amazing, truly like a day at the beach, and it's still got the most amazing formula for nourishing the lips, cuticles, and any other dry bits you would want to take care of.

Lastly is a rekindled love for my favorite fragrance from last summer. I've been applying the Chloé Eau de Parfum daily this month and I don't know why I ever wore anything else. I think this is really going to be my signature scent. It smells really floral, but not in an overpowering, powdery way. It just smells like fresh-cut roses. I happened to throw this on one day early in the month and my boyfriend complimented it, so naturally I kept reaching for it all month.

Thanks for sticking around if you're still reading, isn't it crazy that there were so many more products I wanted to mention? What were your favorite products this month?
