Makeup Lately #5

October 08, 2015 in Makeup

This post can otherwise be known as "those solid two weeks when I was incredibly lazy." I don't know why, but for the past couple weeks, no matter how early I went to bed, I was waking up so, so exhausted. Maybe it's because it's so dark in the mornings now, or maybe it's because I ended up coming down with a horrible cold. Anyway, I was super lazy with my makeup simply to be able to spend a few extra minutes in bed in the morning. Although it's quite a boring look, I still thought it would be interesting to share how I made myself up just enough to avoid the barrage of "are you sick?" questions when I don't wear enough makeup to work.

My skin was starting to feel quite dehydrated, so I often didn't want to wear any base products - they made me feel like I was suffocating. If my skin was looking particularly bad, I covered up the problem areas with the Clarins Instant Concealer. This stuff has been a godsend - it covers my imperfections pretty well without turning me into a cakeface, and it's really easy to blend out over the face. The only other product I've been using on my skin is the rms beauty Living Luminizer, because I really just can't go a day without some highlighter. This one is noticeable yet really natural, and since it's made with lovely ingredients like castor seed oil, coconut oil, and beeswax, it feels almost like a balm on the skin.

I've been straying from my beloved Dipbrow lately and reaching for the Anastasia Brow Wiz instead. It takes about the same amount of time as using the Dipbrow, but right now it's giving me a more natural-looking result. Since I've been so minimal with my makeup lately I didn't want my brows to be quite as bold as usual, so the Brow Wiz has been perfect. I forgot to include it in the picture, but I've been making sure they're set in place with the Anastasia Clear Brow Gel.

For eyes I've been sticking to a little liner and a little mascara. I recently dug out the Clinique Quickliner for Eyes Intense in Intense Black Honey out of my collection - it really stays put but is easily smudged out before it sets. It also doesn't smear everywhere throughout the day when used in the waterline, so score. The color is a nice break from blacks and browns, too, as it's a deep burgundy color that makes my eyes pop - it kind of looks like I got more sleep than I did. For lashes I still haven't been able to get enough of the Maybelline Full N' Soft Waterproof Mascara - it holds a curl and stays put all day, and it gives a really lovely fluttery effect to the lashes. I don't see myself reaching for anything else for awhile.

My go-to lip look the past couple weeks was a little bit of the MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl smudged into some lip balm (the Glossier Balm Dotcom of course - it's my favorite lip balm ever). The result was a really pretty neutral color that just added a tiny bit of definition to the lips.

What products have you been reaching for a lot lately? Do you ever get into lazy makeup ruts like me?

Autumn Skin Essentials

October 06, 2015 in Skincare

While I'm not a huge fan of cold weather, I love that it gives me the opportunity to slather on all the moisturizing skincare. Don't get me wrong; I still like to feel hyper-moisturized in the summer, but autumn and winter are when my skin stops being so combination and leans more on the dry/dehydrated side. It just feels so nice and refreshing to pile on the moisturizers - like a drink of water for the skin.

One thing I've been really making sure to do this year is switch out my regular cleansers for oil and balm cleansers. I raved about the Una Brennan Superfacialist Vitamin C+ Cleansing Oil in my September Favorites, but it's just been keeping my skin nice and glowy and bright since I began to use it. It leaves the skin feeling very clean, though not that "squeaky clean" feeling, but without any tightness whatsoever.

Although I started using it in the summer, the Vichy Aqualia Thermal Serum is definitely a staple in my autumn skincare routine. It just packs so much moisture into the skin. I've been using it morning and night, and I find it is light enough to wear under makeup yet moisturizing enough to last all night.

I've also upped my day cream game for the cooler months. Again, I started wearing the Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cream at the end of the summer (I wrote about it along with the Vichy Serum in my latest Current Skincare Loves post), but it's perfect for autumn as well. This is another lightweight cream that works beautifully to plump, smooth, and hydrate the skin. This is the one I always reach for if I know I'll be wearing makeup over top - the way the lactic acid smooths the skin makes it perfect underneath makeup.

The other daytime moisturizer I've been using lately is the Antipodes Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream. This one is a lot thicker than the Kate Somerville one, but it never feels heavy on the skin. This gives my skin a bit more of a glow, so I keep to wearing it on no-makeup or minimal makeup days - makeup does have the tendency to slip off a little bit when I'm wearing this. But it's still my favorite day cream - I'll be buying a full size of this once my baby tube runs out.

As for nighttime moisturizing, I haven't been able to get enough of the Nourish Argan Skin Renew. It feels amazing on the skin, and it actually works so well in conjunction with the Vichy Serum. When I use this cream at night I always wake up with plump, juicy skin that makes me look like I got a few extra hours of sleep. A lot of people talk about how they only use this a couple times a week, but I really can't go without it for more than a day - it's just fabulous.

If I'm not using a moisturizer, I love me a good face oil. My favorite one lately has been the Antipodes Divine Face Oil. This was in my September Favorites too, because my skin just drinks this stuff up. It seems like Antipodes might be my skin's favorite brand if that's possible - all their products leave my skin feeling the best it's ever felt. This is a great one to keep the skin moisturized throughout the night and to leave you with a bright, dewy glow come morning.

With dry and dehydrated skin comes dullness - another thing I like to make sure I'm getting enough of in my autumn skincare routine is exfoliation. The REN Flash Rinse 1 Minute Facial has been a favorite because it's incredibly effective and yet so quick to use. This sloughs away all the dead skin, leaving a radiance like nothing else.

And my new favorite little pot of goodness has been the Indie Lee Calendula Eye Balm. I haven't only been using this for my eyes (although it's been wonderful at eliminating dehydration lines there), but also on any dry patches. It's incredibly gentle, so it hydrates without irritating whatsoever. This has been my little hero lately - I've been using it on my lips to combat an allergic reaction I had to a lip balm, where it's clearing things right up, and also on my sore nose while I'm trying to get over an awful cold. It seems like autumn is well and truly here!

What are your favorite autumn-appropriate skincare products?

The Brown Lip Edit

October 03, 2015 in Makeup

Around this time last year, I wrote up a berry lips edit. This goes to show how much my tastes have changed in the past year - while i still love me a berry lip, I've switched my typical autumn look to include a more brown-toned lip. For me, this is a more realistic everyday look and i just can’t get enough of neutrals (as you probably know, I never ever stop blathering on about them). I've got some easy everyday brown-y nudes as well as some deeper colors that are interchangeable with a deep, vampy red.

When I decided to write this post, I just had to buy the Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Milky Way for it - I had been pining for it for the longest time, and this seemed like the perfect excuse. It's such a unique color, and it's just stunning. It's not just your ordinary brown, as it's got a bit of a gray tone to it. The formula of this is stunning as well and feels so nice on the lips - I've got my eye on a few more shades from the range now. My favorite way to wear it is with the MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl underneath - the soft pink tones peeking through the "greige" is just perfect to me.

The palest of the bunch is the Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Truffle Tease (from the Buffs collection) is just a perfect nude if you're looking for something more brown-toned. It's got a little bit of a cool tone to it so it really complements my skin. It's similar to Laura Mercier Milky Way, but with much less of a gray tone. The formula is really nice as well, creamy yet with a reasonably long lasting time - I've definitely got to try some more Maybelline lipsticks.

Another wearable everyday option from Maybelline, also from the Buffs collection, is the Color Sensational Lipstick in Touchable Taupe. I love the color of this one, but I'll admit I haven't yet found the best way to wear it. On my lips, it looks quite warm and clashes with my skin. I'm thinking of trying different lip liners underneath or mixing it with Laura Mercier Milky Way. I'll report back on this one.

One of my favorite everyday grabs for the past (almost) year has been the MAC Lipstick in Velvet Teddy. This one has been quite hyped up, so if you don't own it yourself you've surely heard about it. It's just a great beige-y pink neutral that really makes the lips look a little plumper - this one looks perfect on top of the MAC Whirl lip pencil, too.

I've got a newer option from MAC as well, from their new-ish "The Matte Lip" Collection. When I saw they were bringing out a lipstick version of the Whirl lip pencil, I jumped on it as quickly as I could. It's a bit darker and more brown than the liner, but it's just a perfect autumn shade. This is one I go for when I'm wanting to wear something a little more vampy but don't want all eyes on me - the neutral tone keeps it from being too bold for my tastes.

Here's a moody swatch of Colourpop Grunge I never ended up posting to my Instagram

Here's a moody swatch of Colourpop Grunge I never ended up posting to my Instagram

Similar to MAC Whirl we have the Colourpop Lippie Stix (is it always stix or just stick when it's singular?) in Grunge. This came out as part of their fall collection centering around the 90s, so I basically needed one of everything. This is a matte formula that's a deep brown like Whirl, but seems to have more of a red/plum base rather than a pink base. I love the formula of the matte Lippie Stix - so creamy for a matte but still long lasting.

And lastly are two more lip products from Colourpop, this time from their Ultra Matte Lip range. I've got a review of the first four I got here. Trap is one of my favorites from the first set of Ultra Mattes I bought, and it's probably the most unique color I own. It's definitely a brown, but it's also got a lot of gray and maybe some lilac thrown in there too. I really like the effect on me. Beeper is a more recent addition - it's a little bit of a deeper brown nude. It looks quite warm in the swatch above (maybe because it's next to Trap), but on the lips this is a slightly cool-toned brown as well. These are quite drying on the lips, but the wear time and lightweight feel really make up for it.

Do you like brown-toned lip products? What are your favorites?
