The Morningtime Glow

January 21, 2016

I know I've written quite a bit about skincare to give the skin a glow as of late, but that really is all I'm after in my skincare. The lab I now work in, along with my new apartment, are so, so dry and they leave my skin totally dull and tight if I don't start taking care of my skin the minute I wake up. I've recently fallen into a routine that really seems to be helping me get my glow on.

The newest addition to this lineup is the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. I just got this last week, but oh man I can already tell it's a winner. Like all the other products I'm constantly raving about from them, this really does kickstart that glow. The name is totally accurate - it comes out as a gel, but it's a creamy, milky gel that doesn't strip the skin in the slightest. My skin feels oh so clean after this, but still incredibly moisturized and soft. I never feel any tightness at all after using this, and that's saying something - even the cleansing balms I've used leave my skin feeling a little tight if I don't moisturize immediately after. It's just so gentle so it's absolutely perfect for a morning cleanse (although it is pretty great at removing makeup at the end of the day too).

The next step that's a necessity for me is a few quick spritzes of a face mist. It really wakes me up, and I don't know if this is a thing but I feel like the serum and moisturizer work better if I put it on slightly damp skin. The two I've been reaching for most lately are the Herbivore Botanicals Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist when my skin is feeling angry, and the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist when I'm feeling more dry. The rose in the Herbivore Botanicals mist really helps to calm my skin down and feels really refreshing throughout the day, and the Tatcha is basically a liquid moisturizer - this stuff is amazing.

You know my serum of choice lately because I wrote a review on it last week - the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Liquid. I've found this does an amazing job at keeping my skin moisturized for longer periods of time, which is excellent because of the constant dry conditions I'm in.

The last step of my morning routine is moisturizer, and again, I've got two choices I typically rotate between. The Glossier Priming Moisturizer has pretty much reached holy grail status for me by now (as much as I hate that phrase), and it's the one I reach for without hesitation if I've got any redness or dullness hanging around. If I'm wanting something a tad more moisturizing I'll go for the Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cream. This is such a great everyday moisturizer - it feels really soothing and nourishing, but it's also quite lightweight and works well underneath makeup. I'm always amazed at how much it plumps up and smooths the skin, and I love that it's very slightly exfoliating because of the lactic acid content.

By the time I've sped through these four steps, I'm looking considerably more awake and ready for the day. What are your go-to morning skincare products?

Workbag Lip Staples

January 19, 2016

I'd like to think I'm pretty low-maintenance with my makeup. Although I love the stuff, I tend to go with a more minimal look on an everyday basis and don't really bring along any touch-up supplies with me for the day. I do, however, always have to have a lip product on hand. Maybe I'm addicted to them, but the feeling of my lips without a slick of balm or lipstick on them grosses me out. Lately I've been throwing some form of tinted lip balm into my work bag to be able to top up throughout the day, and I've found the ones that lend themselves perfectly to the occasion.

The one that's been living in my bag since the day I got it last summer is the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Petal. These tinted balms have the loveliest formula, so creamy and moisturizing while still packing a punch of pigment. The Petal shade is a gorgeous "my lips but better" color, a true neutral pink.

In case my lips are getting extra dry, I always like to have a more heavy duty balm on hand. I've got about three tubes of the Glossier Balm Dotcom floating around different bags to always make sure I've got one available. It's my most favorite lip balm, as it's thick enough to stay put for awhile without being sticky or goopy. And it actually moisturizes the lips, rather than sitting on top like some other balms.

For when I'm wanting a little more color, I've always got the Nudestix Lip & Cheek Pencil in Mystic in my bag. I love the little tin this came with too - I like to squeeze as many lip products as I can into it to keep them all together. The pencil is wonderfully creamy and glides onto the lips, but it eventually sets down to a more matte/satin finish that stays put for hours.

I'm sure those three options are enough, but what if I want something more glossy? That's where the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in Rosewood comes into play. These glosses are my favorite - they're moisturizing, not sticky, and they smell delicious.

The newest addition to come live in my workbag is the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Balm Perfector in, again, Rosewood. It's just such a pretty natural shade. This is incredibly similar to the original lip perfector, but with (understandably) less of a glossy finish.

What are the lip products that live in your bags?

The Beauty Wishlist

January 16, 2016

I'm back with another wishlist post. As you might know, I recently moved out from living with my parents to share an apartment with my boyfriend. Now that I have to pay for rent, electricity, heat, etc, I can't really afford to go on weekly trips to Sephora anymore (not that I really could when I was doing it anyway). This has left me lusting after so many beauty products it's crazy - you always want what you can't have, right?

As usual, most things I'm after are to give the skin a glow. I've seen rave after rave of the BECCA Backlight Priming Filter, and it sounds like it's right up my alley. I usually skip priming my face, but if I had a primer this beautiful I certainly wouldn't skip out on using it. Another beaut from BECCA that I'm lusting after is their Shimmering Skin Perfector in Pearl, but I still can't decide if I want the Poured or Pressed version. I'm a sucker for a cream highlight, but I'm so in love with the pressed formula and have been using mostly powder highlights these days.

In my last wishlist, I mentioned how smitten I was over the Tom Ford Skin Illuminating Powder Duo in Moodlight. I'm still swooning over it, but the NARS Dual Intensity Blush in Craving may do as an acceptable and somewhat cheaper alternative. It looks just similar enough that it may just take my mind off of the Tom Ford.

The last highlighting bit I'm yearning for is one of the new Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kits. I can't get over how beautiful the Gleam kit is, and the Starlight Illuminator has become my favorite highlight - I feel like I need it. The pinky-champagne shades in this palette look absolutely stunning and like colors I'd use all the time.

The last few things on my list are all nude lip products. I've recently fallen back in love with the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks, and I own Lolita and Bow N Arrow. The next shade I'm after is Lovesick, a really pretty pinky-mauve nude. It looks like the perfect everyday shade, and I think it would look stunning mixed with either of the two shades I already have. Now, just to find it in stock.

Another nude I've been lusting after is the Colourpop Lippie Stix in Aquarius, part of their new collection with KathleenLights. I've seen swatches that compare this to the CandyK shade from the Kylie Jenner Lip Kits, although this isn't matte. It's still a gorgeous pinky beige nude shade though, and seeing as the Kylie Lip Kits are pretty much impossible to get your hands on, I'd definitely go for this one instead.

The final piece on my wishlist is the MAC Lip Pencil in Dervish. MAC's lip pencils are my favorite formula for lip liners, and Dervish is a really pretty pinky nude (again - sorry for sounding like a broken record here). Every time I'm at a MAC counter I end up swatching this lip liner before reading the name, so I don't really know how I've managed to go this long without buying it.

What do you have on your wishlist?
