Get the Look: Audrey Hepburn, Moon River

It's no secret that my favorite movie of all time is Breakfast at Tiffany's. Sure it's a cliche, but watching it brings on so many happy feelings that I can't help it. My favorite scene in the whole movie is when Audrey Hepburn as Holly sings "Moon River" while sitting on her fire escape. It's such a beautiful song, and recently when watching it I realized what a lovely makeup look she's wearing in the scene.

It's not as full-on glam as her other looks in the film - you know the ones. This look is more of a hazy, lived-in version, which really appeals to me. Her skin in this scene (as well as the whole film) is flawless, though it looks like she's not wearing any foundation at all. To mimic this, I'd pick something that looks incredibly skin-like, like the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water - it's so thin that it just becomes one with the skin, while at the same time evening out any imperfections. It also has the perfect finish, not too matte and not too dewy. She's also got this soft rosy flush to her cheeks, so I thought my two favorite blushes from Stila would be perfect. The Convertible Color in Lilium is one of my favorite makeup products - it blends onto the skin so easily, is so creamy and fresh-looking on the skin, and the shade is the perfect natural pink. The Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush in Rosewater is a very similar natural pink shade, but it's a liquid rather than a cream. This one gives a much more toned-down and subtle look, although it can be layered for more oomph. You could also do some contouring to try and mimic Audrey's killer cheekbones - since this look is so natural though, I'd leave that out on myself.

She doesn't wear too much eyeshadow throughout the movie, but what she does wear are soft browns and grays - the shades in the Urban Decay Naked2 Basics Palette are perfect. I'd use a bit of Frisk, the third shade from the left, all over the lid. Audrey's most famous look is her cat eye, so a gel liner is essential. I like the L'Oreal one. After drawing a subtle winged line, I'd go back into the eyeshadow palette and take a mix of Primal and Undone, the last two shades, to smudge and diffuse the line. And you can't have an "Audrey Look" without lashes, so after curling them, I'd apply coat after coat of my favorite mascara at the moment, the Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara.

Throughout the film, she wears a very distinct salmon-y nude lip color (I've found that the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Pink in the Afternoon is a really close match), but in this scene it's, again, more lived-in and subtle. The perfect product for this is definitely the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk. It's the best nude pink, and the soft matte finish lends itself very well to this worn-in look.

You can check out the clip of this scene here. What's your favorite makeup look from a movie?

Getting a Glow with Valentia Beauty

February 16, 2016

So it seems that, despite an unusually warm December, we are finally in the throes of winter. My skin has really been feeling the frigid temperatures (it was -30 here this past weekend), feeling constantly tight and looking ultra dull and gray. I was on the lookout for some intensely hydrating skincare to remedy that situation when these goodies from Valentia fell into my lap.

Valentia is a skincare brand that's new to me, and I'm really kicking myself for not knowing about them earlier. They're named after the Roman Goddess of healing, hinting at the soothing and repairing nature of their products. They use natural and organic ingredients in every product, and they're free of parabens, cruelty free, and vegan friendly.

The first thing I ripped open and tried out was the Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask*. The name alone was enough to sell me on this - I've been desperately in need of some hydration and plumping action. The list of ingredients in this one is quite impressive, containing hyaluronic acid, organic sea buckthorn oil, Japanese green tea, and aloe vera. As you can see from the above picture, it's bright orange in color and has quite a wiggly consistency. It spreads easily onto the skin, and you can instantly feel how hydrating it is. My skin absolutely drinks this stuff up. The directions say to leave it on for 15-30 minutes and that some slight tingling is normal. I leave the mask on for the full 30 minutes because it feels so nice and hydrating, but I haven't felt any tingling from it. I notice that right away after rinsing it off, my skin is a lot smoother, plumper, and much more hydrated and glowing. I feel like whatever skincare I put on afterwards sinks in so much better. I have only used this at night so far, but I can tell it would be an amazing addition to a morning routine or before going out if you've got the time - this would make makeup application a breeze.

The other bit I got to try out was their True Glow Eye Cream*. Again, it's got an amazing list of ingredients - astaxanthin, an antioxidant to increase moisture levels, resistem, which are plant stem cells, Vitamin C, rosehip oil, and arnica for its anti-inflammatory properties. I've been suffering with some dark undereye circles lately from not sleeping very well, and my short time using this has already made a difference, I feel. It's very lightweight and creamy but again, intensely hydrating. I can actually feel it firming up the skin around my eyes shortly after applying it, which I assume is very promising. Like the mask, it's got a bit of an orange tint, which is very translucent, but on me it seems to be a little bit brightening as well. My one gripe with this product is the packaging - while I like that it's in a pump so it's more sanitary, the pump dispenses too much product for me. But really, that's the only fault I found. I've been loving the instant gratification of this one so much that I've actually been keeping up with using it, when normally I let the eye cream step of my skincare routine fall by the wayside.

Would you try out either of these products?

The Beauty Lover Tag

February 13, 2016

I was tagged by Emma to do the Beauty Lover Tag earlier this week, and it seemed like such a fun set of questions that I had to do it!

If you could have anyone in the world do your makeup, who would it be?

This would hands-down be Lisa Eldridge for me. Her looks are always so effortless and her attention to detail is impeccable. I'm always amazed by how natural she's able to keep the skin looking, and I'm sure getting my makeup done by her would be the most relaxing experience of my life.

What's your top makeup tip?

Now I don't really have one of these - I'm not all that innovative when it comes to my beauty products. For me though, I find my eyebrows come out a lot more natural looking when I apply brow gel (or in this case Glossier's Boy Brow) first and then fill them in second - it makes them all feathery and I don't have to use as much product to fill them in.

What one makeup item could you not live without?

Again going with the eyebrow theme here, I couldn't live without my Anastasia Brow Wiz. I don't mind going completely barefaced, but I always need to have my brows done. I feel incomplete without them, as they're quite sparse on their own.

What one skincare item could you not live without?

It's kind of giving me the willies thinking of not being able to use a whole arsenal of skincare products every morning and night, but I think I'd go with an oil - it could multitask and remove makeup as well as work as a moisturizer.

What are you worst at when it comes to applying makeup?

WINGED EYELINER. I just can't get the hang of it. It might be that my eyes are slightly hooded, and not even in a symmetrical way, so it's basically impossible to get my wings looking even and not droopy. I've tried and tried, partly because I've always been into the Audrey Hepburn-esque cat eye look, but it just never works. The closest I've come to success is doing a tiny "kitten eye" with some gel liner and an angled brush.

What's your biggest pet peeve when it comes to beauty?

There's no particular look that gets on my nerves, as I like to think that if someone's doing their makeup a certain way, they must like it that way, so who am I to judge? I do, however, hate this whole surge of wearing makeup being "false advertising" and the whole "take your girl swimming on a first date" thing. For a very, very well-written and powerful post on this sentiment, check out Brooke's amazing I'm not a product post.

What's your favorite makeup era?

I hinted at this before, but it's definitely Audrey Hepburn's look from the 60s. I love the natural skin, hazy cat eyes, and nude lips look and always try to do it myself. In fact, keep an eye out for a "get the look" kind of post coming soon.

What's your guilty pleasure product?

I don't really use anything I "shouldn't" be using, so I guess I'll interpret this as products I feel guilty about buying but love them anyway - this would hands-down be highlighters. I think I have more highlighters than anything else in my collection (ok, besides lip products), but I just can't stop falling for the newest releases and wanting to snatch them up. I only have one face, might as well make it a disco ball, right?

What's your underdog product?

I think right now it would be the Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara. I don't see all that much hype around it, but it's definitely my favorite mascara I've ever tried. I spoke more about it in my January Favorites post.

What's your favorite makeup product of 2015?

I think I'm going to copy Emma on this one and go with the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue. I mentioned it so many times last year, and it's still one I reach for quite often. I can't get over how healthy it makes my skin look - it covers up any imperfections I need it to, while giving the skin a really lovely glow.

I'd like to see Beti, Faith, and Brooke do this tag next, but if you'd like to do it too, feel free!
