Spotlight: Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks

February 25, 2016

It's not often that I write a post dedicated to one single product. I much prefer writing edits of my collections rather than reviews, but sometimes a product comes along that you fall in love with so much that you just have to shout it from the rooftops. For me lately, that product is the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick. Over time, I've found myself with four shades from the line, which I realize is not all that impressive compared to some collections - Bow N Arrow, Lolita, Lovesick, and Mother.

L to R: Bow N Arrow, Lolita, Lovesick, Mother

L to R: Bow N Arrow, Lolita, Lovesick, Mother

Bow N Arrow is described as a "fawn nude." It's the most perfect brown-toned nude. It's got a hint of pink and warmth so it's not that true greige color, and it's really quite wearable. Bow N Arrow is a great shade for everyday because it's truly a perfect neutral - it goes with everything.

Lolita, as I'm sure you all know, is that quintessential, wildly-hyped dusty rose. I've seen it look quite mauve-y on some people, but on my pink-toned skin it pulls quite red-toned. This is the one that really made me fall for these liquid lipsticks and neutral lips in general, so it'll always be a favorite.

Lovesick is another super nice color for everyday. It's just a nice, simple mauve-y pink nude. It's an incredibly color on its own, but it's also stunning when mixed with Bow N Arrow.

Mother is the boldest option I've got. I ordered it online when the new shades were released last summer, basing my decision on Sephora's description saying it was a "dusty mauve pink." It's not exactly dusty compared to other dusty mauves in my collection, but it sure is a nice color. It's quite the complexion-brightener, so it's the perfect pick for when you want to liven up your face without picking a super bold shade.

The colors offered in the line are all unique and stunning - I've got my eye on a couple of the bold colors next, from the raspberry Bauhau5 to the deep vampy Exorcism.

So the colors are really something extraordinary, and the formula is as well. The liquid lipsticks I've tried usually fall within two categories - they're either liquid-y, or they're mousse-y. These are more on the liquid-y side of things. They easily paint onto and coat the lips in a single coat (though I have heard some of the darker shades take some more effort to build up). The doe-foot applicator is short and slightly stiffer than others I've used, which makes it easier to apply precisely. The more liquid-y formulas are typically long-lasting but not quite as comfortable on this lips, but for me, these are both. They don't dry out my lips or settle into lines, except maybe after wearing them for hours and hours, and they can easily last a whole day on me without needing to touch up. Of course, if I eat a huge greasy meal, there's going to be some wear-and-tear, but these put up quite the fight against my daily turkey sandwiches.

New In: The Nude Glow

February 23, 2016

Today's post is a bit of a mish-mash - think part haul, part "Makeup Lately." I know I just recently posted a Beauty Haul, but I was able to go shopping with my sister last weekend for the first time in almost two months, so a few other beauty bits have fallen into my possession. My new things have been working incredibly well together and with a few of my commonly-used bits, so I've been slapping them on just about every morning before work (I'm slowly but surely getting over the weirdness of wearing makeup while working and getting very messy in a lab).

The first thing I picked up was the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation. Now if you've happened upon this blog before, you'll know I'm quite fond of lightweight and sheer bases, so this one might seem like a weird pick. I just haven't been able to get it out of my head though after seeing it in so many Jaclyn Hill and NikkieTutorials videos. I got the shade 115 (or R230, I don't know which is the old system of naming and which is new), which I believe is the lightest shade. I really like that it's in a stick form, as it's so easy to swipe on and blend out. I'm able to give myself a really natural coverage because I only stripe on a small amount on and around my nose, forehead, and chin and blend it way out. It gives a really natural skinlike finish, and I like that it lets the glow I've got from my moisturizer shine through.

I've still been using my usual combo of the Glossier Boy Brow in Brown (I'm desperate for a new one though, I'm stalking the website until they restock) and the Anastasia Brow Wiz in Medium Brown. And for eyes I've been using another new addition - the Tarte Tartelette in Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette, which is a thing of beauty. I tried convincing myself I didn't need this for the longest time (as I have the original Tartelette palette), but as soon as I saw it in person when my sister got it for Christmas I knew I needed it. It's got warmer tones than the original, which I really like despite having cool-toned skin. I've really been loving it so far, and you can expect a full review in the next week or two. My most used shades so far have been Smarty Pants and Firecracker, the second and third shades in the second row. Mascara has still been my favorite Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara (although I'm pretty sure I need to crack open my backup tube very soon).

The lab I work in is usually super cold, and I have this weird thing where my face goes bright red when I'm cold, so I haven't been wearing any blush or bronzer or anything. It'll just make me look even worse. I have, however, still been going for a bit of glow - I just have to. I've fallen back in love with the rms beauty Living Luminizer - it's just stunning. It's a really natural-looking highlight, as in there's no glitter, but it still gives quite the intense sheen. I'm obsessed.

The last bit I picked up on my shopping trip with my sister was the Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer in Nude Pop. As you saw in Saturday's post, I've been loving a nude lip lately, and this new addition is no exception. It's just the perfect pinky nude shade, and I've found it looks amazing when applied over the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillowtalk.

The Sheer Nudes

February 20, 2016

Now that my everyday makeup is a little more minimal than it used to be, I've found a new type of lipstick to hoard. While it was previously luxuriously rich mauve-y neutrals, I've now found an affinity for sheer nude colors. These are perfect for everyday wear as they're usually quite moisturizing or at least comfortable on the lips, and they just gently enhance your natural lip color. Opaque nudes make a statement, but sheer nudes are all about that subtlety.

Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani Lipstick in Ex-Girlfriend | The newest addition to my collection, I'm sure it doesn't surprise you that the one I went for in the latest UDxGwen releases is the nude. This has such a lovely and creamy formula, although it's not very longlasting. But since it's such a low-maintenance shade, it's super easy to reapply, and it's even possible without a mirror. It's the perfect balance of a beige, pink, and peach-based nude with a hint of golden pink shimmer in it - nothing chunky or ostentatious, just pure lip-enhancing here.

Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Boy | I bought this one purely because Fleur deForce said she wore it on her wedding day, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. This is my first and only Chanel lipstick, and it makes me feel gloriously fancy whenever I whip it out. It's similar to the UD lipstick in that it's sheer with a bit of a golden sheen, but it's got much more of a pink tone to it. It doesn't come across as much on the lips, but it definitely does something stunning.

MAC Lipstick in Patisserie | This one's been kicking around my collection for quite awhile. In fact, this was the first true nude shade I owned and was the only one for awhile. This has a bit more pigment than some of the others mentioned here, but as it's a Lustre formula it still lets a bit of your natural lip shade shine through. This one is more beige-based, although as you can see it's quite similar to Ex-Girlfriend and Boy. Again, it's got a bit of golden shimmer in it, and I will say it's a little easier to detect here than in the previous two formulas.

Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick in Light/Medium Nude | This is one of my favorite drugstore finds. I picked it up on a whim a few months ago because I was intrigued by their range of shades - you simply pick your general skintone (unfortunately right now the range is limited to Light, Light/Medium, and Medium) and you're supposedly left with your perfect Pink, Red, Nude, and Berry. Although I'm quite fair and would definitely fit into the Light category, I went with the Light/Medium option as the former would have definitely been too light to look like anything whatsoever. It gives the loveliest hint of rosy brown to the lips and is actually super moisturizing.

NARS Lipstick in Dolce Vita | This one came into my possession via the Sephora Give Me Some Nude Lip Set (review)- it's basically the only reason I bought the set. It actually gave me the idea for this post, as it's so much more sheer (sheerer?) than I was expecting, but it's beautiful. This has much more of a rosy tone than a typical nude, but the sheer color payoff makes it the perfect addition to any nude-lip-lover's collection. It's the perfect pick for no-makeup makeup, adding the subtlest hint of definition and enhancement to the lips.

Maybelline Color Elixir in Caramel Infused | One of my favorite drugstore lip products, these color elixirs are the best of a balm and a gloss in one. They're not sticky in the slightest but give off the nicest sheen, and they moisturize the lips quite well. They actually feel so interesting on the lips, gel-like and cushion-y. The shade Caramel Infused is the perfect pinky nude that's actually quite similar to my natural lip shade, so it's definitely a "my lips but glossier" pick.

What are your favorite sheer nudes?
