Dewy Skin in a Bottle (or Two)

May 05, 2016

It's absolutely no secret that I love me some glowy skin. And I mean on my own face, not in a "it puts the lotion in the basket" sort of way. I'm constantly using products to give me a glow - since my skin is quite dehydrated and lackluster, it seems to be a case of wanting what I don't have. If I had oily skin I feel like I'd just bask in my natural dewiness. But until then, I've found the perfect combination of base products to give me the dewiest, healthiest looking skin.

I've long sung my praises of the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue. I've been using it for just over a year now, and it's the one product I always go back to. I'd go so far as to say it's my favorite ever base product. I like that it actually feels moisturizing on the skin - some other tinted moisturizer-esque products I've tried have promised to be moisturizing but have just ended up feeling chalky and dry on my skin. It gives a decent amount of coverage (I prefer light coverage anyway), and it gives the skin a gorgeous healthy glow. Despite being so dewy-looking, it sets down and doesn't transfer, and I can never feel it on my skin at all.

I constantly feel the need to try new products, but my love for the Complexion Rescue is so strong that I wasn't really into trying a whole new base product. Instead, I started looking for ways I could just amp up the dew factor. I immediately thought of my new favorite primer, the BECCA Backlight Priming Filter. At first, I tried simply applying the primer before the Complexion Rescue, as one usually does with a primer, and I instantly knew I had a winning combination on my hands. Since the Complexion Rescue allows your skin to show through the coverage, the glowiness of the BECCA primer really shines through. The BECCA primer adds a beautiful soft golden glow to the skin (despite being super fair, it still looks like a natural glow on me) that helps to diffuse the light over imperfections, so it actually helps the Complexion Rescue hide darker blemishes it wouldn't normally cover on its own.

After trying this combo in two steps for awhile, I started to get that itch for something new again. So again, instead of buying something new, I tried mixing the two together and applying them at once. And I found it made my skin even dewier. I mix maybe one half to three quarters of a pump of the BECCA primer with about two pea-sized dollops of the Complexion Rescue and simply smear it all over my face and blend it in with my fingers. It's perfect for more rushed mornings because you get the two steps in one. I find the makeup lasts just as long as when I use the primer in the proper way, and mixing the two doesn't seem to decrease the coverage at all. Right now this is pretty much all I've been wearing on my face, and I just can't get enough of the effect of these two beauties combined.

What are your favorite dewy skin products?

MAC Cool Neutrals

May 03, 2016

A couple weeks ago it came to my attention that MAC had not only reduced the price of their single eyeshadows, but also of their premade palettes. I had always wanted a MAC palette but didn't want to pay for 15 single shadows or put up with the stress of trying to choose the perfect shades. So once I saw that a premade palette was a more reasonable price for me, I jumped at the chance to grab one and ended up with the Cool Neutrals Palette.

MAC has several different premade 15-pan palettes, including a warm-toned one that everyone has been going crazy for. As you probably know (because I never shut up about it), cool tones suit me better, and the Cool Neutrals Palette just looked absolutely gorgeous.

The shades are broken up into color families by row - the top row has more pink/plum tones, the middle row is cool browns and taupes, and the bottom row are more gray-toned. The shades included are:

Pick Me Up - (matte) pale ivory

Cozy Grey - (matte) cool grey

Crushed Clove - (frost) dirty gold olive

Deception - (frost) chocolate gold

Brun - (satin) muted blackish brown

Flounce - (matte) chalky white pink

Sweet Allure - (satin) soft light pink

Sun Tweaked - (frost) soft frosty coral

After Dusk - (veluxe pearl) midtonal rose

Blackberry - (matte) muted burgundy brown

Silver Fog - (lustre) white w/ silver pearl

French Clay - (frost) white grey frost

Cumulus - (frost) dirty grey charcoal

Pearled Earth - (veluxe pearl) deep blue grey

Black Tied - (velvet) black w/ silver sparkle

As cool as it sounds to make your own palette, I actually really like that this palette gave me the chance to try some MAC shadows I probably wouldn't have tried on my own. If I made my own palette, it would be full of "blogger favorite" shades like Satin Taupe and All That Glitters. I love every single color in this palette, but there are only two or three that I had heard of before.

The quality of the shadows is the same as other single MAC eyeshadows I've tried. Some shades are softer and creamier than others in the palette (for example, Crushed Clove has a beautiful texture while Deception, right next to it, feels a little rougher). There isn't a bad formula in the bunch, though. They last on me all day long with a primer, as do the other MAC eyeshadows I've used. I love that I have this palette now, as it's made me feel more adventurous when it comes to putting eye looks together (although it is still all neutrals). I was in a bit of a no-makeup rut for a few weeks, but this has inspired me to start putting makeup on again. My favorite shades in the palette are Blackberry, Crushed Clove, Deception, and Cumulus, but I can definitely see myself using every shade. I certainly won't be needing more eyeshadow for a long, long time (so remind me if you see me lusting after any more on Twitter), and I honestly don't want to reach for any other palette but this. This has filled the gap of cool-toned eyeshadows in my collection perfectly, and I might even replace my beloved Naked2 palette with this.

Have you tried any of MAC's premade palettes? What's your favorite? If I didn't have enough eyeshadow to last me a lifetime I'd probably go for the Nordstrom Now Palette next.

April Favorites

April 30, 2016

I told you in my Lovin' Lately post earlier in the month that I was going to have a monstrosity of a post for my April Favorites, so here I am. April was a good month for me. Between my Kylie lip kits being delivered, my birthday, and the Sephora VIB Sale, I tried a lot of new things. And remarkably, I loved pretty much everything.

I've only got one skincare favorite, so let's start there. This month I was sent a lovely package full of goodies from Purlisse, and so far the standout has been the Pur~Delicate Gentle Soy Milk Cleanser*. This is a perfect cleanser for both the morning and evening for me. It doesn't foam up, so it doesn't strip the skin, and it's just a nice gentle daily cleanser. It'll also remove non-waterproof makeup which is a plus.

I wrote up a full review on the three shades of the Kylie Lip Kits I got late last month, and they really are worth the hype for me. Candy K is my favorite so far of the three I got, and it's just a lovely, incredibly long-lasting formula.

I've got two eye favorites, one I picked up with a birthday gift card and the other I got in the Sephora sale. I've been wanting a Burberry Wet & Dry Silk Shadow for the longest time, so once I had a Sephora giftcard in my pocket I took the plunge. I ended up getting the shade Rosewood, which is just a perfect rosy taupe shade that's good for everyday. The formula of this is UNREAL - it's probably the softest, creamiest (powder) eyeshadow I've ever tried. The other bit for the eyes I've been loving is the Milk Makeup Ubame Mascara in Inked. I wrote about my first impressions of Milk Makeup products here, and I think the mascara is so far the standout for me. It's got the perfect amount of drama for everyday without being too over-the-top, and the unique wand catches and coats every lash.

Speaking of Milk Makeup, I also want to mention their Matte Bronzer in Baked. This is what started my obsession with the brand - I've really been into bronzers lately, and this cream version is right up my alley. It's the perfect shade and blends unbelievably easily, leaving a lovely sunkissed glow to the skin.

My last two makeup products are all about the glow. I finally got my hands on the BECCA Backlight Priming Filter (with the same gift card I used on that Burberry eyeshadow), and I've been obsessed ever since. It adds such a beautiful glow to the skin, and I've been loving wearing it on its own, under base products, and mixed into my base products. It's really quite versatile. The last makeup bit was of course going to end up here - the Tom Ford Skin Illuminating Powder Duo in Moodlight is just stunning, isn't it? It looks even more stunning on the skin. I've been using both shades pretty much all over to pretty much look like a beacon of glowing skin. I'm in love. To apply this I've been loving the NARS Yachiyo Kabuki Brush, which I got for my birthday as well. It's the perfect shape and size for applying pretty much all cheek products - I've been using it for powder blushes, bronzers, and highlights.

My last favorite of the month is the Calvin Klein CK2 Fragrance. I talked about this in my Birthday Haul, but it's really such a perfect spring fragrance. It's not floral like all the other perfumes I own, but it still smells quite fresh and green - something about it reminds me of freshly cut grass. It settles down to a more masculine scent which I still really love - I've been trying to refrain from dousing myself in this 24/7.

What were your favorites this month?
