Subtle Makeup Staples

October 06, 2016 in Makeup

This might as well be another "makeup lately" post, because I've been reaching for these products nonstop. During the week I go for a super subtle look - I want to enhance my features and look more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but I don't really want to look like I'm wearing makeup. I feel like it would be impractical for my job to be wearing a full face of makeup, all though I do go more "all-out" from time to time.

I start with a really light base - something like the Milk Makeup Sunshine Skin Tint is perfect. It's got their original Sunshine Oil in it, so it's super moisturizing and glowy. This makes it the perfect everyday base, and it also has SPF 30. I love that it's in the click-y rollerball too, so it's super easy to apply. Time is usually of the essence on weekday mornings.

To conceal my undereye circles, I've been exclusively reaching for the Onomie Bright Concealing Elixir.* Since it's formulated as part eye cream, part concealer, it doesn't even look or feel like you're wearing makeup. But somehow, it does an amazing job at covering dark circles. With consistent use, it will diminish them over time as well.

The ultimate low-key brow product is the Glossier Boy Brow. I use the shade Brown and I can't go a day without using it. It defines the brows in such a natural way, making it look like your own brows, just a little more bushy and a little more beefed-up. I only have one backup tube left, so I'm going to need to get on that.

I don't always wear eyeshadow on a day to day basis, but when I want a little something extra I love the Giorgio Armani Beauty Eye Tint in Nude Smoke.* It's a neutral beige shade that is only slightly darker than my skintone, so it truly is a "no-eyeshadow" eyeshadow. It's my go-to during the week because it stays put all day even without a primer, so it's great to swipe on and go.

For mascara, I've been all about the Pixi Black Lacquer Lash Primer.* It's a deep black color so it can be worn on its own, and that's my favorite way to use it. It really defines and fans out the lashes, so I don't even miss my usual volumizing mascaras. It's a definite "I woke up like this" lash look.

I always have to add something to my cheeks, and lately I've been loving the BECCA Beach Tint in Fig - it adds the subtlest flush to the cheeks, and while I don't use it much on the lips, it performs well there, too. I love the dusky pink shade of Fig because it goes with everything. I just dab a little between my fingers and then dab it on my cheeks. It's pretty foolproof.

I can't go a day without some highlighting action, and on my more subtle days I go for something like the rms beauty Living Luminizer. It adds the most natural-looking glow with no sparkle or glitter. If you're looking for something less icy in tone, I'd definitely recommend the 24/7 Touch Up Skin-Perfecting Cream. It's a peachy-beige cream that adds the most perfect dewy sheen to the skin. Both of these brighten up the face without looking too obvious.

Subtle lip products are kind of my thang. For something really barely-there, I go for a layer or two of the Glossier Generation G in Cake - it's the perfect peachy nude shade. The matte, balmy formula of these give a blotted look to the lips that looks super natural and pretty. If you want a more traditional lipstick, look no further than the bareMinerals Gen Nude Radiant Lipsticks. There's so many nude shades to suit any skintone. My favorite of the bunch is the shade Strip, which is a rosy brown nude. It's pale enough to be a nude lipstick, but the rosy shade keeps it from looking corpse or like "concealer lips."

What are your favorite subtle makeup products?

*Some products mentioned have been sent to me for consideration, but all opinions are my own. Please see my disclaimer for more information.

Meet Lilo!

October 05, 2016 in Lifestyle

I wanted to do an extra little personal post this week to introduce you to our new baby Lilo. We brought her home almost two weeks ago, and we're already so in love with her. She came from the MSPCA, and her previous owners de-clawed her and left her teeth in such a rotten state that they had to be removed. So now she's our little gummy baby. (It's only her fangs that were removed, so she can still eat normal food!)

She meows a lot. She's the craziest in the mornings, so I think she's just excited that we're finally awake and walking around.

She'll also respond when I talk to her, which is my favorite. I tend to talk to animals as if they're people so it's nice that she actually keeps the conversation going.

She loves laying on my posterboards I use for blog photo backgrounds, but only when I'm trying to take blog photos.

She likes when I get Sephora packages even more than I do and tries to climb in the boxes right away (until I take everything out and give her the empty box).

She has claimed our lounge chair for her own and will clearly let us know if she's mad about one of us sitting in it.

She begs for food even more than a dog and tries to climb into the fridge when I open it.

When Brett plays with her she'll suddenly get up in a huff after a few minutes and sit in the corner with her back to us.

She pretends to sharpen her claws on the couch even though she has no claws.

She chases her own tail.

She nudges my hand when I'm giving her treats so more will fall out of the bag (she's no dummy).

I'm so, so happy to have her as part of the family, and my heart is so full. I hope you liked this little intro to Lilo! Regular beauty content will resume tomorrow!

Jouer Fall 2016 Lip Cremes - Review & Swatches

October 04, 2016

I first reviewed the Jouer Long-Wear Lip Creme Liquid Lipsticks a few months ago, and they've since become my absolute favorites. The formula is just the best. They're some of the most comfortable on the lips that I've tried, and they somehow still last such a long time. They start to fade when eating something greasy of course, but even then they don't smear all over the place. They never get thick or crumbly on the lips, and they layer nicely - this is a plus because you don't have to remove the entire thing to reapply, and it's also great because you can layer the metallic ones over the matte ones. I was so grateful to have been sent their new Lip Creme shades that came out for fall as well as their new Lip Topper, and they've impressed once again.

The shades look glossier here than they normally would because I took the pictures while the lip cremes were still wet to try to not kill my lips!

Buff - a matte peachy nude. This is the one shade from the collection that I can't see myself wearing - it's just too pale for my liking. This one took a little extra work to make it opaque and not streaky, but it really was the only shade with this problem.

Filigree - a metallic champagne. It's got a lovely taupe shade to it that keeps it looking neutral while being a metallic. This one also lets the natural lip shade shine through - it's not totally opaque, but it's not streaky.

Terra - a matte warm neutral shade. This one reminds me a lot of MAC Velvet Teddy. It's not too pink, and not too brown - just the perfect neutral for fall.

Tawny Rose - a matte cool dusty mauve. This one is my favorite of them all, which I'm not surprised by. It's quite similar to Terra but with slightly cooler undertones - you can get away with just getting one or the other (if you prefer warm shades, go for Terra, and for cool shades, pick Tawny Rose).

Snapdragon - a metallic cool plum. This one is just stunning. It's beautifully opaque and not streaky. It reminds me of a more intensely frosted version of MAC Syrup - it's actually a lot more wearable than I thought it would be, and it's probably my second favorite after Tawny Rose.

Penny - a metallic warm copper. I think this is a little too warm for my skintone, but if you're looking for a copper lip, look no further. This one is perfect.

Bronze Rose - a metallic cool deep rose. Ok, maybe this one is my favorite! It's such a beautiful neutral shade, and the shimmer helps make the lips look fuller. I'm going to try mixing this one with Praline from their original shades, and I'll report back!

Dahlia - a cool electric plum. It has some shimmer in it with a slight blue shift, but it's not as much as the other metallic shades. This is quite an "out-there" shade for me, so my brain tells me it looks weird, but I think it's still flattering. It actually reminds me a lot of MAC Rebel and is a perfect plum shade for fall.

Cabernet - a matte cool deep red. This one is showing up a lot lighter in the picture than it is in person. This is just my perfect red. I'm tempted to just get rid of all other red liquid lipsticks because this is all I need.

Brique - a matte warm brick red. Ok, I spoke too soon. This is a perfect 90s red as it's got a bit of a brown tone to it. Warm reds usually don't suit me, but I think that bit of dusty brown to it makes it more wearable, and it's one I can see myself wearing a lot in the fall. Maybe because it looks like autumn leaves!

Tan Lines Lip Topper - the new shade, a metallic shimmering bronze. I'm completely blown away by this formula - it's not a liquid lipstick, yet it's not a gloss. It's more like a velvety balm. It adds the nicest warm bronze over top of any lipstick. In the last two lip swatches above, I've added it on top of Brique, and then the last photo is the lip topper on my bare lips. It's lovely either way. Now I'm tempted to buy the Skinny Dip shade!

Top to Bottom: Tan Lines, Buff, Filigree, Terra, Tawny Rose, Bronze Rose, Penny, Brique, Snapdragon, Dahlia, Cabernet

I'm so pleased with almost all of the new shades, and I'd highly recommend any of Jouer's liquid lipsticks if you're looking for some new ones to try. Like I said above, the formula is the best I've tried!

Have you tried Jouer's liquid lipsticks before? What fall shade are you most excited for?

Thank you so much to Jouer for sending me their new fall shades to try! All opinions are of course my own. Please see my disclaimer for more information.
