Re-ignited Love

February 01, 2018 in Makeup

I've been really challenging myself to pick through my collection on a weekly (sometimes even daily) basis and find something to wear. I've already been finding lots of old favorites, and I can't even remember why I ever stopped using them. This is slowly helping me get out of that "buy every new thing" mentality I had going for awhile, and it's really teaching me to love what I have.

MAC Next To Nothing Face Colour | New foundations are the one thing I'm still always tempted to try. Having great- yet natural-looking skin is always my main goal with my makeup, so I always feel like my holy grail is out there waiting somewhere. But I have so many bases that fit that category already. I've fallen back in love with the MAC Next To Nothing recently. It feels quite balmy on the skin and is really dewy. It doesn't look greasy, though. It gives little coverage, but I find it gives a similar effect to the Glossier Skin Tint - evened out and super glowy skin in a bottle. When I was using this back when I first got it, I was applying it with a beautyblender, but recently I've been just using my fingers and it works much better. It just melts into the skin so beautifully.

Onomie Bright Concealing Elixir | I have no idea what possessed me to stop using this, but the release of their new Lip & Cheek Sticks reminded me how much I loved this little beauty. It's skincare-meets-makeup at its finest. It feels super nourishing like an eye cream, but it packs a punch in the coverage department and covers up my undereye circles beautifully. It becomes one with the skin, and it doesn't sit in my fine lines. You only need the tiniest dot of product for both eyes, so the little tube will last forever.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer | I saw this in Jamie Paige's "Testing Youtuber Favorites" video recently, and it made me start reaching for mine again. I have Nude Bronze Light, which is a more neutral, almost cool-toned shade. It's perfect for adding a bit of definition to the face, and it works really well on my skin without making me look orange. This one seems more matte than the other shades I've swatched, but it still leaves the skin with a soft, subtle glow that I'm loving at the moment.

NARS Blush in Impassioned | Since I've been using a powder bronzer, I've also been reaching for a powder blush. This is always a favorite I go back to - it looks almost like nothing in the pan, but on the skin it's such a beautiful, soft blush. It's on the cooler side, so it's perfect for my skintone. I love mauve blushes, and this one is just so pretty and lovely. The formula of NARS Blushes can't be beat, either.

Bite Beauty Lip Pencils | I've been getting back into using lip liners lately (thanks to the Pat McGrath one I've been raving about since Christmas), and it's reminded me how nice the ones from Bite are. They're traditional wooden pencils, but they're so much creamier than other ones I've tried. They're not so creamy that they slide around or don't last, though. The shade selection is beautiful, too - I love that they started with a boatload of nudes and then added bolder colors. The shades 010, 022, and 036 are some of my go-tos.

Dior Lip Glow Pomade | I've been obsessed with the Dior Lip Glows lately, and it made me dig through my makeup drawers and grab the gloss version recently. It doesn't really add color to my lips like the original balms do, but it leaves a really pretty glassy sheen and feels soft and pillowy on the lips. I just like having the tube with me, too, because it looks so pretty - is that weird? I don't know if I'd repurchase this when I finish it, but for now I'm loving using it again.

What favorites have you rediscovered lately?

NARS Wanted Eyeshadow Palette | Review + Swatches

January 31, 2018 in Makeup

I was a little late jumping on this bandwagon, but eventually the beauty of the NARS Wanted Eyeshadow Palette wore me down. I had been resisting it for no other reason than I just have enough eyeshadows for a lifetime, but it was Anna's review that finally pushed me over the edge. I was telling myself I would never use the glitter shades, but when she compared them to the toppers in the Charlotte Tilbury quads, I was sold.

The NARS Wanted Eyeshadow Palette contains twelve shades in a neutral-leaning-red color scheme. It holds a mix of mattes, shimmers, satins, and glitters. The product description on the Sephora website describes the shades as, "Biarritz (matte neutral cream), Satisfaction (shimmering golden pink), Delirium (metallic rose), Temptress (satin paprika), Seven Heaven (matte sand), Shadow Hill (matte saddle), Mendoza (shimmering pink copper), Wicked Game (satin cranberry), Shooting Star (sparkling champagne), La La (shimmering deep bronze), Fallen Star (shimmering antique bronze), Coconut Grove (matte deep brown)." I normally have to stray away from warm-toned shadows because they all turn orange on me, but I've been pleasantly surprised with this one - they maintain their soft, warm rosy feel. I can see this palette being equally wearable in both the winter and the summer months.

I've never had an eyeshadow palette from NARS before, but I've heard sometimes there are a few hit-or-miss shades. This isn't the case with this palette - every last shade is beautiful and performs well. The mattes have a silky smooth feel and aren't chalky in the slightest, but they're not so creamy that they stick down in places and not in others. They're perfectly blendable. The two brown shades on the left in the middle row are absolutely perfect for using in the crease, and now I start every eyeshadow look with them. The shimmers are buttery and soft and have great color payoff on the eyelids, even when applying with a fluffier brush like a MAC 217 (I like doing this for a wash of color, but some eyeshadow formulas won't pick up). There are three sparkly shades in the palette, and two of them still apply well with a brush without glitter fallout. The third, which is the left shadow in the bottom row, is a little chunkier, but it looks absolutely gorgeous when gently tapped over any of the other eyeshadows with a finger. It adds so much extra dimension. I love the inclusion of the deep matte brown, too - it's perfect for smudging out my eyeliner for a softer look. I'm really happy with the quality of the shadows are how they perform - I've been using it almost every day because I can get a more intricate look accomplished with only a couple brushes, and it's actually really easy!

The shadows last well on me throughout the day with a primer and don't crease or fade. I'm sure I sound like a broken record by now, but everything creases on me without a primer, and some things even do with a primer underneath. So I'm always really excited when I find an eyeshadow that will last all day. I'm so happy with this palette, and I would definitely recommend it if you don't already have a lot of warm eyeshadows. I rarely wore eyeshadow on a daily basis before getting this palette, and now I just can't stop reaching for it - I'd call that a success.

Have you tried the NARS Wanted Eyeshadow Palette?

Loving Lately | January Favorites

January 30, 2018 in Makeup, Skincare

I was about to start this post with my usual "Wow the month went by so quickly," but actually, January has just dragged on and on. I mean, it's still not even done yet. Is anyone else with me? January is usually a pretty "blah" month for me, except in terms of beauty - trying out all the new products from Christmas is always my favorite thing. This month, as always, I have a mixture of new and old favorites. I'm still working hard to shop my stash and use things up - gotta save up for a wedding!

It was a good makeup month - I discovered a new favorite nude lip all thanks to my sister. She got me the Pat McGrath Permagel Ultra Lip Pencil in Bare Rose and it's officially my favorite thing. The formula is amazing, and I'm thinking it may have surpassed Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk as my wedding lipliner. Speaking of lips, I've also fallen back in love with the Glossier Generation G Lipstick in Like. I actually lost mine a month or two ago and finally bought a new one, so it's been nice to have it again. It adds the perfect pink flush to the lips, and come to think of it I might just pair it with the Pat McGrath pencil for my wedding!

I also mentioned buying the Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow in Dream in my Christmas Beauty Haul, and I've been reaching for it all month. All the shades are matte, so it makes for a super chic plum-toned eye. I just love cool tones, so I can't stop dipping into this one. This has a lovely formula, too - just the right amount of pigment, not too powdery, and they stay put through the whole day. The last makeup bit I've been using nonstop this month is the Kjaer Weis Highlighter in Ravishing.* I've lusted after Kjaer Weis products for the longest time - I mean, how stunning is that packaging? The product inside is just as beautiful. It's a subtle pale golden cream that adds the perfect sheen to the tops of the cheekbones. It has a slightly drier, almost a cream-to-powder texture, so I find it lasts really well and doesn't slide around.

As for skincare, I've been ending my routine each morning with the Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment. It works wonders for reducing my redness and protecting my skin. It also contains SPF 35, so it's got me covered for the day. It's a thick green cream that changes into a more beige shade as you rub it in. It creates such a nice barrier between your skin and *the world* so I feel like my skin is cleaner and less irritated at the end of the day when I wash it off - on days I don't use it, I definitely notice my skin takes in a lot of the dust from work and I'll be super dry and dull the next day. Emily Ferber of Into the Gloss just wrote an article about how wearing this on planes has saved her skin from post-flight breakouts, too!

As for new skincare, I was sent the Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks* earlier in the month, and I'm already looking to order another box. I love undereye patches as it is, especially on mornings when I wake up feeling puffy, and these are nice and lightweight and don't slide around. I like that I can still go about my morning and don't have to sit still while wearing them. They feel so nice and cooling on the skin and really help to depuff my undereyes. The last bit of new skincare I've been using all month is the Holika Holika Skin & Good Cera Super Cream. I happened to go into CVS on Christmas Eve and realized they had added the K-beauty section, and I picked this up on a whim because I know my skin just loves ceramides. I've heard people compare this to the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream, and while it's not a complete dupe, it's good enough for me, and it was only $16. It has a thicker consistency that just melts into the skin on contact, and it keeps me moisturized all day/night long. It's just a good, basic moisturizer that I think would work for pretty much anyone.

My last favorite isn't exactly a beauty product, but it's been featured in almost every photo in the last month and I've been burning/savoring it nonstop. My sister was spot-on in her Christmas-gifting this year apparently, because I've been obsessed with the REPLICA By The Fireplace Candle she got me - we had both been wanting the perfume, but she figured a candle would be a better gift in case the perfume reacted weirdly with my skin. It has such a cozy scent, with that smokiness like burning wood, but it also has a touch of sweetness attributed to roasted chestnuts. It doesn't have a very strong scent, but it still does fill the room when lit. That's fine with me, because my nose is quite sensitive. All this has done is made me really, really want the perfume!

What were your favorite products this month?
