Hair Favorites and Routine

I recently got my hair cut the shortest it's ever been (which actually isn't very short - it just barely grazes my shoulders).  I've been really happy with it since getting it cut, so I thought I'd share my usual routine and favorite products to use in my hair.

When I first started getting my hair cut shorter and shorter a year ago, I caved and bought the It's a 10 Miracle Leave-in Product.  This was before I had developed my current talent of being able to justify any beauty purchase, so the $35 price tag seemed outrageous to me.  But I've used this every time I've washed my hair since buying it, and I haven't even gone through half the bottle a year later, so it was definitely worth it. This helps keep the frizz at bay, and it was a lifesaver this summer when the humidity would normally make my hair puff up to twice the size of my head.  I spray this into my hands (usually about 6-8 pumps) and work it through freshly washed hair before combing through. I have both the original and the keratin version, but to be honest I don't really notice a difference between the two - they're both great.

Another product I've started using recently in place of the It's a 10 is the Living Proof Prime Style Extender. I got a sample of this with my last Sephora order, and I had to go out and buy the full size as soon as it ran out.  This, as the name suggests, extends the lifetime of your hairstyle. I like using this because it keeps my hair feeling nice and clean and lets me stretch out the time between washes. When the sample ran out and I went back to the It's a 10, I noticed my hair got oily and had to be washed a day or two sooner. I still think the It's a 10 is a great product and will continue to use it when I don't plan on styling my hair, but the Prime Style Extender is definitely a new favorite.

Once I have either the leave-in conditioner or the style extender in, I'll let my hair air dry for a bit. I'll then spray in the Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray. This smells like a vacation, and it makes my hair less fluffy and more messy and textured once it's been dried.  I'll either then let it airdry all the way, or I'll roughly blowdry it. I'm completely useless at doing my own blowouts, so I basically just flip my head over and and blowdry it to get more volume at the roots. If I'm feeling fancy I'll use a round brush to make sure the shorter layers in my hair aren't flipping in any crazy directions and curl them under slightly.

Once my hair is dry, I'll spray in a little of the Not Your Mother's She's a Tease Volumizing Hairspray, mostly near the roots to hold the volume I've created by blowdrying upside-down and to maybe add a bit more volume.  My hair is naturally wavy and thick, but even with a short haircut the weight of it sometimes makes the roots lie flat, so I put a lot of effort into keeping some volume there.

Since I don't like washing my hair every day, I'll use a dry shampoo to eke out the style a little longer. My favorite that I've tried is Batiste, specifically the original scent. It just smells very clean, but the scent doesn't linger on your hair like some of the other scents do. Some of the other scents leave my hair feeling greasier than before I applied the dry shampoo, but this one absorbs the oil and freshens up my hair while also adding some nice texture and volume.

Favorite "MLBB" Lip Products

As someone who doesn't like to be the center of attention, I feel like bold lips are a bit difficult for me to pull off.  Even if people tell me my hot pink lipstick looks great, I still feel weird and end up wiping it off before I go out into the world.  As a result, I tend to gravitate towards more neutral or "my lips but better" colors.  My lipstick box is overflowing with 'em, so I thought I'd go over some of my favorites.

My favorite of the bunch is definitely the Dior Lip Glow.  In the tube, this looks like an incredibly unflattering pale baby pink, but it magically works with your lips (although I was a chemistry major, I'm still not quite sure of the science of this) to bring out a customized-for-you pink shade.  This doesn't seem to add a color on top of my lips but rather bring out a natural-yet-brightening shade from within - my natural lips if they had more color.  The formula is great as well - a very nourishing, almost plumping balm. I would consider using this as a night treatment if it wasn't so pricey - it feels that nice on the lips.  I will definitely repurchase this when I run out despite the eye-watering price tag.

My other two favorites come from MAC.  The first is MAC's Viva Glam V.  This is a lustre finish, so it has a bit of shimmer in it, but it only helps to enhance the shape of your lips rather than looking glittery.  This is a sheer pinky-brown color that makes the natural color of my lips appear a bit darker.  This is one of those 90s-ish/Kylie Jenner shades that would look good on just about any skintone. Another one that's similar in color, though without the shimmer, is the Nyx Butter Lipstick in Pops.

The other MLBB offering I have from MAC is Syrup. This is also a lustre finish - I'm pretty sure they're my favorite kind of MAC lipsticks.  This is also a very neutral color, like Viva Glam V but instead of being a brownish color this one is more mauve-y.  This leaves a sheer wash of purple-y-pink that compliments my cool-toned skin nicely and is the one out of the two MAC colors I reach for more often.  My sister has found a dupe for this color in the Maybelline Color Elixirs in the shade Mauve Mystique - she wore it to her senior prom.

So there you have it, I've given you a true my-lips-but-better, a my-lips-but-browner, and a my-lips-but-mauvier.  What are your favorite MLBB lip products? Do you have any drugstore favorites I should try?

A New Base Routine

Right around the time my Everyday Makeup Routine post went up, I of course decided to shake up my routine.  A lot of it remained basically the same, but I have made a change to how I apply my base in the mornings, so I thought I'd give you an update as I'm really loving this new combination of products.

I start by applying a layer of the Revlon Skinlights Face Illuminator in the shade 100 Bare Light.  Coming out of the tube, this looks much too yellow/golden for me but it's so sheer that it blends into my cool-toned skin and actually corrects some of my redness.  The soft shimmer in it doesn't appear sparkly on the face but rather diffuses the light so imperfections and spots become blurred.  It makes a good base and ensures that I can use less product on top of it.  It also has the very smooth, silky texture of a primer, yet it doesn't break me out like other primers do.  It definitely helps the staying power of my makeup.

Next I go in with the Maybelline Fit Me Shine-Free Stick Foundation.  I only use a thin layer on my chin, nose, and forehead, where I have some redness and acne scars. I also apply some of the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser concealer under my eyes (I'm currently testing the Marc Jacobs Remedy Concealer Pen for this as well), and I blend everything in using the Real Techniques Contour Brush.  I used to use the Expert Face Brush for blending in my concealer, but I found that the dense brush wiped some of the product away instead of blending it in.  The contour brush is softer and more flexible, so it blends in the product without wiping it away.

Sometimes I feel like this is enough coverage for me, but if I'm having a not-so-great skin day I'll go in with one more product, either the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer or the Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream as mentioned in my Everyday Makeup Routine.

So the original base products haven't changed much, and it may seem like all I've done is add extra work for myself, but using the two extra products underneath the tinted moisturizer/BB cream in thin layers ensures that I can make sure my spots/redness are covered without using tons of the tinted moisturizer or BB cream. It actually feels like I have less on my face when I use all three products.  The thin layers also seem to make my makeup last longer, I've found.

Have you been trying any new base products lately?
