New In From Revlon

December 20, 2014

Recently I've been perusing the "new-in" stands at the drugstore for things that looked interesting that I could maybe review. Two products that piqued my interest are new releases from Revlon.

The first is the Eye Art Lid+Line+Lash in Topaz Twinkle. I think they're riding on the success of their double-ended nail polishes because this packaging is the same. You get a cream/liquid eyeshadow on one end, to be applied with a doe-foot applicator, and a glitter eyeliner on the other, applied with a brush. When I first put this on I noticed the eyeshadow applied kind of patchy and took some work to blend, but once it was blended it looked beautiful. It's a bit of a champagne/rose gold color, without the warmth or brassiness of a pure copper color. I didn't wear it with a primer and it lasted a full 8 hours with no creasing. I was seriously impressed. The glitter side was also surprisingly lovely. The glitter was noticeable, but not opaque - this is ok with me because with such a pale glitter, I'd want to put it over a darker liner anyway. It didn't irritate my sensitive, watery eyes or flake off, and it was easy to remove at the end of the day. This is definitely a great option for holiday parties - I'm thinking of lining my lower lashline with this for my next Christmas party.

The other new product is the Ultra HD Lip Lacquer. All of the colors looked beautiful, but in the end I chose Garnet. The name is a little misleading, because this is actually a purple/pink shade rather than a red. I was a little disappointed when I first saw that this has a brush rather than a doe-foot applicator, but it's actually very easy to use and puts on the perfect amount of product. The brush is sturdy enough to apply the product neatly and precisely - I can pretty much line my lips with it. One the lips, it has an interesting "cushion-y" feel, much like the Maybelline Color Elixirs. The pigmentation is incredible and opaque with a high shine. I was afraid the shine would be too over-the-top, but I was comfortable enough in it to wear it to work. It feels super nourishing on the lips as well. It doesn't bleed at all and lasts a few hours, usually until I start eating lunch. It leaves a super lovely stain once it wears off, so I usually don't even feel like I need to reapply. It does, however, transfer very easily because it doesn't set like a matte lip product would - it's definitely not kiss-proof!

Overall I'm really impressed with both of these new releases, and I'd love to get my hands on some more colors! Have you tried either of these?

The Christmas Edit

December 18, 2014

Christmas is hands-down my favorite time of year. I love the decorating and the music and just how cozy and pretty everything looks with fairy lights all over the place. I'm feeling festive the whole time from Thanksgiving up until Christmas, so I really pull out all the stops for Christmas parties and get-togethers.

The look that screams "Christmas/holidays" to me the most is a bit of gold and burgundy eyeshadow (this is why the Charlotte Tilbury Dolce Vita Palette is one of the top things on my Christmas list). My favorite combinations right now are Gold and Garnet (3rd & 6th in bottom row) from the Lorac Pro Palette and Last Sin and Sonic (top row far right, last row 4th from left) from the Urban Decay Vice3 Palette (shout out to my sister for the super early Christmas present). Another eyeshadow that makes me think of Christmas parties whenever I wear it is YDK (10th from left) from the Urban Decay Naked2 Palette. This is a little more low-key, and definitely a great option if you're scared of the burgundy in the other 2 looks, but still super festive. It's a very unique bronze in that it's more cool-toned than your normal bronze and gold eyeshadows. When packed on, it can look almost purple-y/silver - I find it also makes a great option for New Years Eve! A similar purple-y-bronze eye look can be achieved with the By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Misty Rock with MAC eyeshadow in Sable over the top - one of my current favorites.

Eyeshadow taken care of, another thing I like to do is always use a black liquid liner. It's so pretty and clean-looking to have a crisp liquid line rather than my usual subtly smoked out pencil liner. I used to be absolutely useless at winged eyeliner, but the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner has turned me into a pro (ok maybe not a pro, but I can always make both eyes even). If you're really feeling festive you can top off the eyeliner with a glitter eyeliner as well - I'm currently loving the glitter side of the new Revlon Eye Art Lid+Line+Lash (I have the shade Topaz Twinkle).

With more eye makeup than I'm used to, I like to keep the rest of the face fairly natural. I love using the Diorskin Nude Skin-Glowing Foundation with the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer to achieve a perfected base that still looks like my skin. For cheeks I go with my usual Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Exposed because the mauve-y-brown color goes with everything and subtly sculpts the face. I finish off with a little bit of the Benefit Watt's Up on my cheekbones because when can you add in a little extra glow if not for Christmas?

Another classic holiday look is a festive red lip. If you're looking for a true red, look no further than the MAC matte lipstick in Russian Red. This is less blue-toned than Ruby Woo, so it will look nice on all skintones, and the matte formula stays put through Christmas cookies and eggnog.  Another option that I'll definitely be breaking out this season is the Nars Audacious Lipstick in Audrey. This is a little more unique, as it's slightly berry-toned and slightly muted as well. This would look absolutely lovely paired with the YDK eyeshadow. A slightly more wearable option is the Nyx Butter Gloss in Red Velvet - these glosses are absolutely beautiful. If you feel like a red lip is too high-maintenance through Christmas dinners, a soft mauve-y MLBB shade would look perfect - my favorite combination at the moment is the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Lip Pencil in Rush with the MAC lustre lipstick in Syrup.

What's your favorite makeup look for the holidays?

How I'm Fighting my Acne Scars

December 16, 2014

As I've mentioned before, my skin isn't outrageously acne prone, but when I do get a breakout it'll leave its mark on me for months. Right now for example, I don't have any active spots (knock on wood that I haven't just jinxed myself), but I still need to put on some kind of concealer or foundation to hide all the marks making it look like my chin and area around my nose are covered in spots. I've found some products that have really been helping to clear up the scars/dark marks left over faster than ever.

I've found that using an exfoliating toner has helped leaps and bounds. When I have an active breakout, I like to (gently) scrub at it with the toner - it not only to helps heal it faster, but I'll get a less prominent mark that will fade more quickly than if I hadn't used the toner. My favorites have been the Pixi Glow Tonic, paired with some exfoliating cotton pads (seriously life-changing), and the First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads. I like using the Pixi Glow Tonic every night and the Facial Radiance Pads every other morning/2-3 mornings per week. Since both are very gentle exfoliators, using them this often and together doesn't irritate my skin or cause me to over-exfoliate. My skin has never been brighter and smoother.

A spot will scar the worst on me if it's been popped. I never purposely pop my pimples because of this, but sometimes it just happens. I always make sure I've got the Origins Super Spot Remover on hand to put on the spot right away to clear it out. It stings for a second if the spot is open, but it goes away quickly and helps the spot not leave a huge scar on my face - some quick stinging is definitely a fair trade for that.

At night I've been using the Indeed Labs Peptabright Serum before moisturizing. I've been using it consistently for about two months now, and it really has made a difference. It faded the acne scars I had over time, and now new scars don't last as long. It also really helped clear up the patchy redness I was prone to around my nose and on my chin. It feels really moisturizing as well, so I'm not trading the appearance of my skin for its nourishment.

Another essential that I've found really helps is using rosehip oil (I got a giant bottle from Eve  Hansen Beauty on Amazon here). It's been lovely since my skin has been dry and dehydrated from the cold. It sinks in quickly and leaves my skin feeling velvety soft rather than greasy, so I reckon it would be helpful for people with more oily skin than me as well. I didn't see results right away from using this, but after using it consistently for two or three months I can really see the benefits. It did help clear up acne scars, and it also helps clear up active breakouts! It felt really weird to put oil on a pimple but it does help clear them up. I think this will be a staple in my evening skincare routine for a long time.

One last important thing to help acne marks and scars is to wear a facial SPF. I don't every day because I work in an office with literally no daylight, but if I know I'm going to be out in the sun I'll put one on. I like using the Neutrogena Healthy Defense moisturizer with SPF 50.

And as I'm waiting for these products to really clear up all of my marks, I've been loving the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer to cover everything up!
