Healing Winter Skin with Skinfix Inc

March 03, 2016

Even though we didn't have a particularly bad winter this year (fingers crossed that it's truly over now that March is upon us), it certainly wreaked havoc on my skin. By mid-January I think I became indistinguishable from a lizard. I spent all winter looking for ways to heal my ailing skin, and of course now that winter is coming to an end I've finally found the solution. Enter Skinfix Inc. - a brand originally from Canada that aims to fix skin irritations using an impressive number of active natural ingredients. I've gotten the chance to try out a few things from the brand, and they've totally changed my bodycare game.

Skinfix Daily Lotion | I mentioned this last weekend in my February Favorites. As my introduction to the brand, I could not have been more impressed. I picked this up with an Ulta coupon when I decided I wanted to try a thinner lotion rather than a body butter. This is phenomenal as an everyday body moisturizer. It contains sunflower, jojoba, and grape seed oils, so it delivers lasting hydration while still being super lightweight. It sinks in quickly without leaving a greasy residue, so it's one I like using right after I shower so I can get dressed right away.

Skinfix Ultra Rich Body Butter* | On days that I've needed something a little (ok, a lot) more heavy duty than the lotion, the body butter has been a godsend. It's got the most incredible texture - a thick, rich cream that's still easily spread over the body. Whereas something like the body butters from the Body Shop have a stiff consistency, this has a smooth, slightly more liquid one. I've spoken briefly about my struggles with my legs - they just get so dry and itchy that it's unbearable, and sometimes I can't even sleep because I can't stop scratching. This body butter has solved that problem completely. I slather a healthy dollop all over my legs every other day, using the lotion mentioned above on the off-days, and I haven't had an itchy leg episode since.

Skinfix Ultra Rich Hand Cream* | I've paid much more attention to hand moisturization this year than ever before - they usually get so dry they crack and bleed, and this year I decided I'd try my best to prevent that. I've been using this offering from Skinfix every night before bed, and I think it's really been working wonders. It's super thick and rich, like the body butter, but it sinks in quite quickly so you're not left with sticky or greasy hands afterward. It uses coconut oil and Vitamin E to keep the skin nourished, and I've noticed my hands are still nice and soft when I wake up in the morning. I like that it doesn't have a scent too, since I'm using it before bed - no smells to distract me while I try to drift to sleep.

Skinfix Lip Repair Balm* | Again, I've spoken about my troubles with dry lips on the blog before. I always have to have a balm with me, because if I let them get too dry I'll develop a nice rash on them that'll last for about a week (I'm really making myself sound great in this post, right?). This new balm has been the perfect addition to my handbag. It doesn't stick around as long as my beloved Glossier Balm Dotcom, so I'll still pick that one on really dry days, but for every day use it's been perfect. It uses coconut and jojoba oil to moisturize, and it really does soften the lips as it sinks in. I also love that it's got one of those slanted tips so you can apply it straight from the tube - I can grab it in a pinch at work without even having to take my lab gloves off.

Have you tried anything from Skinfix before? How are you healing your winter skin?

Tartelette in Bloom

March 01, 2016

Around this time last year I posted a review of the original Tartelette palette. Since I had the original, I had no plans whatsoever to buy its new-ish counterpart, the Tartelette in Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette. But then my sister got it for Christmas, and it just looked so beautiful that I basically couldn't stop thinking about it for two months.

Looking at the two palettes, I can definitely say I prefer this one. I like that it's still made up of mostly matte shades, but it does have those few shimmers in there - it gives it a bit more versatility. This one has more neutral and warm tones overall, as the previous palette seemed to be split by row into warm, plum, and cool shades. Despite having cool-toned skin, I definitely tend to prefer more warm-toned shadows, so I love the color selection of this palette - they just look so much richer as a whole.

The formula is pretty much the same lovely quality from the previous palette. Most of the shades are beautifully buttery and smooth, and every color is quite pigmented. I will say that the three darkest shades feel a bit chalky when swatched, but they don't apply patchily and still blend out just as well as the others. With a primer, these last all day long on me, too, without creasing or fading. This palette has gotten me out of my no-eyeshadow rut lately, and every morning I wake up excited to apply my makeup so I can use this. For a really minimal look for work I've been using the first two shades in the bottom row - the shimmery one all over the lid (it's the perfect everyday champagne) and the matte one in the crease. I've also been loving Firework, the coppery bronze shimmer in the second row, paired with Smarty Pants, the second shade in the second row. I like that all these shades go very well with one another, not just colors within the same row. At the moment, this is my favorite eyeshadow palette I own.

Have you tried the Tartelette in Bloom Palette yet?

February Favorites

February 27, 2016 in Makeup, Skincare

Seriously, how is it already time for February Favorites? For most of the month, I was keeping my makeup quite minimal, so most of my favorites of the month are new skincare discoveries. I've got a couple old favorites in here as well that I've fallen back in love with.

Anese Hydrating Body & Hair Elixir* | I have a full review of this beauty here. It's the only fragrance I've been using all month - I absolutely love the marshmallow pine scent, as it's so unique. It's also not a super strong fragrance, which I like, so I know I won't be causing my labmates to suffocate throughout the day. Remeber you can use the code KELSEYANESE to get $5 off as well!

Pixi Rose Oil Blend | I mentioned that I picked this up in my Beauty Haul, and it's been love at first use. It smells and feels divine - it definitely feels so much more luxurious than the price point lets on. I've been reaching for it almost every night at the end of my skincare routine because it leaves my skin so hydrated and radiant.

Skinfix Daily Lotion | I had been toying with the idea of using a thinner lotion rather than a body butter for awhile, and I finally took the plunge and picked up this baby from Skinfix. It contains really lovely oils, like sunflower, grapeseed, and jojoba, so while it's super lightweight, it delivers lasting hydration. My secret weapon against dry winter skin has been applying this straight out of the shower onto wet skin, and I haven't had any of my usual itchy leg dilemmas since.

Valentia Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask* | I was sent this mask to review early in the month, and again, it was love at first use. It's got the loveliest ingredients, like hyaluronic acid and sea buckthorn oil, so it's wildly hydrating. It truly lives up to its name, and it's one that I've been continuing to use multiple times a week.

MAC Strobe Cream | This is an old favorite - I think it first appeared in my July Favorites last year. I've been trying to ramp up my skin's glow this month to combat that winter dullness, so this has been essential. It's quite moisturizing and gives the skin the most beautiful glow. I've been mixing it into my moisturizer in the morning to give my skin a much-needed radiance boost.

rms beauty Living Luminizer | Speaking of glow, I've fallen back in love with this little wonder. This pot of cream highlighter is actually good for the skin, containing mostly organic coconut oil, and gives you the most believable sheen of them all. There's no glitter at all in this, so it's the perfect pick for daytime.

NARS Dolce Vita Lipstick & Urban Decay x Gwen Stefani Ex-Girlfriend Lipstick | If you read my Sheer Nudes post, you'll know I've really been into a more low-key lip this month. These two have been on rotation all month long, as they look so flattering on and go with anything. Dolce Vita is a little rosier, so it's perfect if you're going for a more "flushed" look, and the UDxGwen lipstick is a stunning pinky nude with fine pink and golden shimmer that really enhances the lips. I can't pick a favorite of the two.

What were your favorites this month?
